Why does 81' suck?

Hey,

I have a really easy, Cheap and effective method of cleaning a tank and when your done you can pour it out on the ground and not get arrested!

Another one off the internet, I've tried it and it works!

Electrolosys of water

Basically, you fill your tank with white vinegar and water (maybe a little salt) you add a steel rod to the tank hook it up to a MANUAL battery charger and you essentially elctroplate your steel rod with the rust in your tank.

The Steel rod must be taped so that bare metal doesn't touch the tank anywhere I used a piece of rebar taped where needed with electrical tape. I would imagine stainless would work even better. You fill the tank with a water/vinegar solution (60/40 should do) then hook up a MANUAL battery charger at somewhere between 6 and 12 amps, negative to the steel rod and positive to the tank. let that cook for a while, an hour to two plus depending on how bad your tank is and your amperage, It is best to do it a slower (less amperage pace) DO THIS OUTSIDE OR IN A WELL VENTILLATED AREA as this process creates a toxic gas. You will see it frothing and bubbling etc. after a while dump out the solution (its just vinegar and salt) and check it. repeat as needed. If your tank is deeply pitted you probably won't get rid of all the rust but you probably will make the tank usefull again.

I have done this several times and have been amazed at the results!

Ive decided to keep the stock tank.. It will definately be a not traditional cafe

great one.. I recently saw a guy do it....

Maybe My next one I will attempt.. But for now I will let my shop do it.

I can attest to the electrolysis rust removal. it really seems like magic when its done.

though I used water and washing soda as the solution. documented somewhere online as ken's electrolysis something something.

Good one on the electrolysis diesel450, using science to your advantage is always cool I reckon.

Oh and Disco, chill about people (whoever they are) knocking your ride! Ask what they ride, the reply may well be 'nothing'. They may just have overemphasized the fact that the evolution of the CB750 saw it lose horsepower and gain weight, both elements of which can be reversed. As others have said, make it what you want.

The stock tank is what I'm betting the majority of non-pro racers used back in the day. Put dents in it to suit your desired final image, or simply fashion a rear cowl to suit. I'm doing the latter with my bike, as I want to keep the large (almost 6 gallon) stock tank because of the range it'll allow. Plus, I personally like the lines its giving with a minimal rear cowl and huge tank and engine. Thats what it comes down to - what you want to do. Don't let anyone tell you what you want to do with your bike and your money.

Cheers, and good luck with the build - boingk

PS: I'm caffinating an '85 shaft-drive Suzuki GS850. If somone tells me it won't be a 'cafe racer' I couldn't care less, it'll still be my bike and I'll still like it! If they tell me it won't be a superbike beater, however, then thats definitely true. I still couldn't care less though, hahaha.

Disco,

I've used the electrolysis cleaning technique several times to clean up old rusted parts and I can tell you it works great. Washing soda is what I used and a small box will last you years!

Has Anyone actually put dents in the tank with draining it of its Fuel Contents?

The seat will make a huge in difference to complete the tanks level of height?

You sir, are in the exact predicament I was in not too long ago. Happily, I took my shaft driven bike, it's big sport touring mass, the 6 gallon tank, slow top speed, and made it into something that I* really like and am proud of. I've had some great comments from the folks around here, and also up close in person as well. To tell you the truth, BUILD IT LIKE YOU WANT TO. Show the naysayers that your bike can be just as cool, noteworthy, and sweet as their CB350s. (Which by the way, is apparently the only bike that can be correctly cafe'd. *insert sarcasm here*)

Every bike has its' own character and style. It should be a reflection of its' owner, rider and builder. The great thing is, around here, those are almost always the same person. Take ownership of your project and let your own creativity shine through. You'll never regret it. Of course until you sell it.

Dude, you'd be so flamed in another forum which I won't dignify by using its proper name! I expressed those very same views over there and you wouldn't believe the shit storm. This is THE forum for the daring, the innovators, the imaginative and the creative, not the so-called purists.

Dignify it. Which other forum? Is there a purist forum out there? I love that shit because then there are the purist who believe that the bikes should all be stock. So where does it end? Who's right? It boils down to this, who's to say (dictate) what mods you CAN make and what mods you CAN'T?

I think people are Purists because they want to belong to something but they lack imagination. SO they feel threatened when they see something that doesn't fit there narrow definition of what something should be. Cafe racers started with a bunch of guys wrenching in the garage and seeing what they could come up with. Pretty much what I see on this forum is a bunch of guys wrenching in the garage and seeing what they can come up with. If the guys in the 50's and 60's had access to what we have access to today they would have taken advantage of it.

Any trys to tell you you're wrong on a design decision tell em to piss off!

I couldn't agree with you more! But, any argument, no matter how well expressed, will fall on deaf ears over there. The mods will be the first to jump your ass, then the toadies will pile on. They suck mightily! One of them told me that this was the forum where dipshits like me belong. I checked it out and dug the shit out of it! :-D

Funny, I want to check it out though! what's the forum?

Who would want to call themself a Toadie anyway?

Well, that's what I call them. :D The site is caferacer.net Seriously, though, you won't get through to any of those ass hats. They are USDA prime assholes. I swore if I ever ran into the mod that started beef with me, I'd..... See? Now I'm getting worked up over nothing. That pretty much sums up what I think of that site, nothing!

DOTHETON.com "Where the dipshits come to wrench, rap, and rock."

I kinda like it. And, I also don't mind being a dipshit. If this place is full of dipshits, they're the most creative, funny, cool group of dipshits I've electronically met in a long while. Put that in your search engine and smoke it you elitist butt stuffing pirates.

*skull, but no crossbones.

I agree, I really like this forum. Very welcoming. I did check the other out and though there is some good info there as well, they definitely have a more serious tone and are quick to criticize.

Undoubtedly there are good builders over there, but no better than a lot of people here. Plus, since they're locked into their silly-assed, narrow-assed view of cafe bikes, their creativity is severely limited.
