Wierd GN400 issue

Hey there, huge fan of the site and all the brains that use it...

I have a 1980 Suzuki GN400 that I've been giving the brat/cafe treatment, which included the removal of the airbox and putting in pod filters (a cheaper EMGO one). Ever since I've done this mod I've noticed that there is a wierd electric discharge when I try to kick-start the bike. It is completely random and doesn't happen every time. I'll kick and there will be a ::SNAP:: sound; I'll look down and there is a light plume of smoke coming from the pod filter area. Then I'll kick again and all is well.

The wiring is a fairly unsophisticated 6V system (headlight, turn signals, gear indicator, etc). Two of the main wiring connectors is located in that same area.

What is this? Is it a static electricity discharge? Is the spark plug arching to the chassis and grounding itself? Do I need to be worried since this is happening directly under a tank of flammable liquid? How can it be remedied?

Any help would be appreciated.

would spitting make a snapping sound and leave smoke? Seriously, I don't know about spitting...

Definitely would.

If you're really sure it's electrical, look for burned wires. No smoke without toasted insulation.

Also electrical smoke has a very unique smell, once you know what it smells like you never forget it. Pod filter turn a mixture very lean and prone to popping back thru e carbs. I'd bet that's all it is.

Sounds like you need to read handbook and find a manual
Doesn't it have an automatic decompressor?
Valve adjustment be be off, there isn't a spec, just 1/8 turn of adjuster screw if I recall correctly?
