Will only start and run with choke on

does it mean it is too lean? should i upgrade the jet size? it is a cl175 with non stock carbs and foam air filters. the bike dies when the choke is turned off

What carbs do you have on it? If it only runs with the choke on that means it's running extremely lean (not enough fuel). If the carbs you installed are known to work with that motor with the jetting that's in them than you may just need to clean the carbs.

I could see how a CL175 would have trouble with VM32 carbs.... :)

It does indeed mean that it's too lean. That could be too small pilot jet, or an air leak. What carbs are on it and how did you mount them? Stock intake manifolds tend to bow when they are over tightened

That's what I'm saying..

The carbs he said were on it were VM30s or 32s (iirc). The bike will not run right with them.

Help us help you man. Hell, I may have carbs that work. Give us the details playa.

I will take the carbs apart tomorrow and give you guys a wealth of info, if you have the stock carbs, I would like to buy them from you, but I'm sure Im going to need bigger jets

Just an aside about "too big" carbs - they will appear to run lean because the volume of air being sucked in by the "too small motor" is not enough to draw enough fuel up through the jets.

Reduce the size of the carbs and the air flows faster through them - drawing up the fuel through the jets by the venturi effect.

Yep, and that's why we are trying to find out what size they really are. I have a suspicion that they are aftermarket for Chinese "clone" motors and that they are quoted as the outlet size which is not the standard sizing approach.

Okay guys here are the photos. and symptoms.

As of right now i have switched out the stock 95 jets to 100. Bad idea, runs worse now. Right now, any throttle equals no power and nearly kills the engine. Only runs with at least one choke on, so the choke is my throttle as of now. The air screw is at 2 1/2 turns and the carbs are SPOTLESS cause they are new. gas, spark and timing are NOT an issue, i have dealt with those. and needle is on 4th clip. I have foam filters, so practically no filters. help? haha

Well, first up...

Those filters are garbage and torn. You'll never tune the bike like that. You'll need new filters before you can go further. Also, measure the main air passages in the carbs.

Those are odd looking carbs. Clearly not VM Mikunis, but what are they? Do you have pics of the top half of the carb and please measure the diameter of the slide.

the gas from the tank i just lined came out reddish color, so it had slight rust in it, but no real big particles, would that be the cause of my problems? i will measure the instake diameter today

We all want to know what size carbs these are. Your 175 will likely never run right on stock internals with carbs as big as the other guy said a few posts back. If you've been running shit gas through them that could be a big part too. With the carbs off, get a can of carb clean with a straw and spray through all of your passages including the mixture screw hole and make sure it comes through all the right places in the carb. Blow out every hole with compressed air. Take your jets, spray through with carb clean then blow out with air. Hold them up to a light and look through the jet orifice. Flush fresh fuel through the petcock (both lines if so equipped) until it comes out clean and clear (use a small mason jar or something you can see through to catch the fuel. Do not put bad fuel through the carbs and run a inline filter if you're still getting shit through the petcock after a few cups worth of fuel. If all is well (including carb bore size) than it should run at this point and then figure out jetting.

Anyone else notice the slow speed mixture screw on the outlet side - like a CV carb? That's most unusual on a slide carb. I can't wait to see the top half of this carb and to see a list of all the jets and the needle.

Oh and the bike should run ok without filters on it if those carbs are not CV carbs (throttle cable runs right to the slides). It will be a little leaner than with filters on, may not take throttle as well but you could get the bike running. Don't let it suck anything up though or it's game over.

* CV carbs will make the bike run like crap without proper intake parts installed (aka the stock airbox, filters, etc). They need all that stuff to get the slides opening properly.
