Winter project: Rat Wagon

Blake

the future is my friend
Started a new project today. Salvaged an old gardening wagon from my grandfather's shed. Turning it into a Rat Wagon for my 8 month old boy, Tiger. Wagon is in rough shape. Aside from the tub, I salvaged the rear arms, front steering hub, and braces. Everything else was rusted out. There's some significant rust around the bolt holes in the tub. I'm planning to weld a pate on the top & bottom of the pan to support and seal up that area. Debating whether or not it will be a lowrider or jacked in the rear. Planning to cut down the front arms, get new axles, bearings, wheels. Fab a new rear axle setup, run some 3/4" square tubing. Probably do some wider lawnmower tires on the rear. Will cut off the end of the pulling handle and weld a wrench on the end for a new handle. Not gonna paint it, just clean up the rust spots and leave it like it is. Wife thinks I'm crazy to put so much effort into an old wagon. ;D

A quick trip to Harbor Freight produced these new rear wheels & tires. Perfect dimensions. Gonna have to "relic" them a bit to match the others. Thinking of using the original plastic fronts because I like the hub caps. Looking for some metal backups because the original tires look like they could fall apart if I look at them crossly. Going over my chassis plans to see if I can skirt needing to weld. I'd have to rent a welder for the day and I'm trying to keep this as low cost as possible. I'm itching to get to it but the rain & snow hit today

Well dang. Nothing but cold weather all week. Add to this it's FINALS week so I've been swamped. HOping to get to the junk store this weekend to secure the scrap parts I need t make this happen. Found some old 7.5" metal Radio flyer wheels to go up front. Looks like it'll balance out pretty well 10x3.5" on the rear and 7x1.5" wheels on the front. White metal wheels, red center caps. Got my chassis drawn out. Toughest thing will be how elaborate I want to go with the front arm/steering.

Very Cool!!!

I am going to have to track down an old red wagon on craigslist and make one of my own!

Please keep up the how-to posts.

Well isn't this one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. I've got a new nephew...guess I've got a Christmas gift to make... muahahahaha. These are cool.

Here's one I did for my kids.

Man! You went all out! Very nice job. Looks like I have the same wheel combo as you. Steering and fame look great on your build. Good job man.

Yeah, the rear wheels are from HF. I used a side grinder with 40 grit sanding disc to shave the tread down for the pie crust slick look. I stuck a bolt thru the axle hole and clamped in a vice so that the wheel would spin. Give her a spin and start lightly grinding across the thread. Makes a big 'ol stinky mess!

I like the simple ones where they just flip the front steering and bolt the rears to a reinforced side wall. I also like the far out ones. But keep in mind, YOU gotta pull the thing. Theres a pinstriper at the local car shows whow did one with a very elaborate dropped buggy spring front axle. Clevis joints and 1/2 steering rods. All steel. Cool as hell, but the thing must weigh 100 lbs. Keep it simple and light as possible. I went a little beefier on mine in hopes of adding an engine when the kids get older. I'm thinking of swapping the tow handle to a drilled alloy piece. The welded chain with brass knucles has already fallin down and drawn blood. Yikes! Guesss thats what happens when you weld a weapon to a piece of chain, then give it to your kids.

Anyway, lookin' good. Keep rockin!
