Wiring harness

Has anyone made a wiring harness from scratch? I would like to give it a try on my 82 gs550. Mine works fine but I eliminated a lot on my bike and there is so much s** t I don't need. Is this hard or should I suck it up and leave well enough alone?

I actually made my wiring harness for my 1982 XJ750 from scratch. It took a lot of patience and was very tedious. My advice if you do decide to make it, is to slowly replace parts of your current harness with new pieces.

I did the same with my '77 CB550F. Very tedious but it can be done. The way I did it was to take the wiring harness out of the bike (after taking photos and video of the way it was routed and connected) and replaced it one piece at a time wire for wire. So the harness was never taken completely apart at any time. I don't know if it's important to you to have the correct color coded wires but that's what I did so that it would all appear stock in the end (mine is a stock restoration). The only place I could find all the necessary colors of wire was a place in England. Very good selection, very low prices and the shipping is pretty cheap too. The website makes it easy to order all the different wire you need and they sell it by the metre with a 1 metre minimum for each wire. They also have pvc sleeving and bullet connectors but they call them Japanese connectors. Here's the link to their website.

btw, if anyone out there makes a new, pre made wiring harness for your bike, it's probably worth the cash to get that one as a starting point and modify it as you see fit. If anyone made a harness for my bike, it would have been worth every cent to me to just buy it instead of making my own. Very tedious but also very satisfying. So if you're looking for a project, have at 'er!

Think I'll give it a shot. Just scored a great deal on eBay. 11 50' rolls of different colored wire for 36 bucks. I'll post how she goes
