"Woods" - '73 CB350F

We'll see, the pods should be here in a couple days so if they don't fit I'll try the uni filters.

In other news, I just got home yesterday from Las Vegas for a week so I finally got to get back to the bike. Headed straight to work on it from the airport, in fact. Decided I didn't like the look for the stock plastic mudguard that goes in front of the rear tire, so I made my own. Drew up a template and cut the piece out of steel. Runs from the front of the swing arm up the frame to the top. I'll use the factory tabs and spot weld it on. Also drew up a template for the top of the frame and will weld on a small rectangle piece to go from the very rear of the frame to the back of the electronics box. Then I can mount my new battery to that. With that done, I can mount my license plate to pop out from under the cowl and then I just need to get my actual seat mounted.

Sorry for the lack of photos, I did't have a digital camera at my disposal. My jets should arrive Monday or Tuesday so expect a big update with lots of photos.

Here's a punchlist of stuff I still need to get done:

-install larger jets when they arrive
-Put pod airfilters on carbs and hope they fit
-cut metal to hold battery
-weld on battery holder and mud guard metal
-spray those pieces
-Mount battery (zip ties or straps?)
-mount seat (aluminum bracing under seat?)
-cut hole in seat and mount tail light
-paint seat
-find some padding for seat
-mount license plate (bracket to mount under seat on steel piece)
-sand down gas tank and clear coat
-pull off clubmans
-buy clip ons and new headlight brackets
-possibly replace stock switches on bars. No signals/elec. start so only need a kill switch
-may need dust covers for shocks depending on what is under those aluminum covers
-new footpegs (not sure I want rearsets at this time)
-continue going through wiring harness and cleaning connections
-BE DONE BY MARCH 16TH, 2011

I found the tubes to look pretty spindley without the factory covers. Interested to see how yours turn out. Gaters would be nice.

I'll pull mine off once I get some of the more major work complete. I'm pretty set on replacing those clubmans with some clip-ons

Re: "Woods" - '73 CB350F (New photos!)

Got quite a bit of work done today. I've been wanting the bike to have a more aggressive angle, so I had a pair of shocks laying around I pulled off a 750 and threw them on. This also gained me the clearance I needed to mount my license plate. Cut off that arched piece of metal on the rear to replace with a flat sheet of steel for more real estate to mount the battery. After that I finished making the plates to replace the stock plastic mud guard. Then I stripped the tank and am ready to clear coat. Very happy with how it turned out.

Here are some pictures from the day:

good progress, glad to see another 350F build

Put pod airfilters on carbs and hope they fit
- tuning them sucks major DICK

new footpegs (not sure I want rearsets at this time)
- check out r1 rearsets i had laying around

Are you just going to use kick start and bump starting to get the bike going? My electric start is getting stuck and sucked before that anyways, I am thinking about ripping it out but leaving the kill switch also.

Yeah I'm hoping it isn't too rough when I start tuning. Your rearsets turned out good. I'm sure I'll put some on, just not sure when. I don't sure the electric start ever. Once I buy clip-ons, I will probably remove the controls and leave the kill switch.

Re: "Woods" - '73 CB350F (Small Update)

Good news and bad news. Good news is that my K&N pd filters arrived and fit! Bad news is I still haven't received my jets in the mail. Checked my email receipt and realized I ordered them from Canada and I should expect 2 week delivery. Great. Moving on. Also received my tail light yesterday so I took it to work to test (we have a variable bench power supply). The light works great! It was pretty cheap and was exactly what I was planning on doing myself but just didn't feel like doing. The light is a small circle filled with about 10 LEDS. There are two lines coming off the positive side, one with resisters in line and the other not, giving the running and braking lights. Pretty cool.

Painted up the steel mud guards and prepped the bike for welding. Found some small L brackets and welded them to a small sheet of steel to act as a battery enclosure. This was the first time I'd ever picked up a welder and the first few practice ones turned out crappy but I'm pretty happy with how its coming along. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me but I'll take twice as many photos next time.

If you see, I added "replace head gasket" to the list... I've been going back and forth and think I should probably do it now. I just really don't want to have to pull the engine. Does anyone know if I can just pull the top valve assembly, set it aside, drop in a new gasket and slap it back together?

When I tried it, I wasnt able to. Your going to have to pull it. Because I wanted to check my cam timing, and I couldn't even get the clearence to remove that cover. Sorry for the bad news.

It's really not too much work to pull that motor, especially if you've already got most of the bike apart. Take is from me, it definitely better to do it right in the first place than struggle with it and waste a bunch of time.

Yeah I think I would feel guilty if I went through as much work as I have and didn't replace something as simple as the head gasket. I'll pull the damn thing.

Mr. Knecht, I'd definitely be down. I'll have to see how strong she runs after I finish the build. That 5 hour trek on a 350 may be a bit taxing. Sure would be a nice ride though.

Yeah, where abouts are you living now? I can meet you halfway depending on if I can get this thing done before moving time :p .

bike looks good! if you're gonna have to wait on your jets anyway you might consider putting your cleaned out carbs back on to see if that fixed the problem. it'd suck to think that your jetting was the problem when in actuality there was something else going on... but then again i gnerally have no idea what i'm doing so take my advice with a grain of salt. the bike looking good thing is 100% accurate though. :)

Thanks man. I have/am considering throwing it back together, but I think the problems were more related to the shit I found in the carbs over the jetting. Since it was starving for fuel I'd assume the sludge that was down around the fuel line may have caused it. but really, I don't know much about these things either. Maybe I'll spark it up in the next few days for fun.

Updates are looking great man. Hope to see you at Backfire in March.
I plan to be there. Just need to find somewhere to buy a damn head gasket! Seems Honda quit making them and no one seems to sell a replacement

There are like 9000 or so available through ebay? I got a full gasket and seal replacement kit for my 350f from ebay for less than $90 shipped!
