Wrinkle finish and other textured paints.

Hi all.

I'm cleaning up my old bike and the one last job to do is paint the pipes and can with high temp rattlecan.

The pipes and muffler are badly pitted with rust on some areas with smooth chrome remaining in other areas. There is pretty much no way I will get a smooth finish with the pitting that is there.

I like the textured or wrinkled finishes. What can I do to cheap rattlecan paint to give it a textired finish. $ are tight so I want to do this as cheap as possible.

I've had steel shot blasted before with some real gritty media.......black oxide maybe? It's so harsh on the surface that it leaves no trace of rust, chrome, pitting, etc. But be aware - it would chew up the gasket surface as well.

I've used the hammer-tone paint on some other projects with good results. It's especially good where you can't get the base material perfectly flat and smooth. If you can't get it smooth, any gloss finish will make all those defects stand out like a sore thumb.

The other suggestion would be to used primer with extra filler. It's available at some of the big box stores and auto stores. It will build up the pitted areas but be ready to do an awful lot of sanding if the pitted areas are deep.

My headers were pretty rusted and I was surprised how little deep pitting I had after bead blasting them. I used vht 2000 degree fire proof primer and flat black paint. cured em in the oven. if you try this let them just cool down in oven. mine were still pretty warm when I took them out. and the paint was actually soft enough that it left marks when I grabbed em w rag. once they cooled it hardened right up. and they really didnt show much pitting w the flat black finish. Then I wrapped em. but they looked good enough I really didnt need the wrap.
My headers average around 550 degrees after a long ride. so if you find wrinkle paint it has to stand atleast that.
VHT high temp wrinkle is only good for like 300 degrees

rustoleum Red caliper paint good to 900 and the discription says its wrinkle. never used it

The bike isn't worth enough to get bead blasting, wrapping or anything else like that done. I'd like to do just a quick fix job on it.

I'm in New Zealand and we have really small selections to choose from. I can get PJ1 and rustoleum but only the gloss versions not the textured ones.

Trek97 are the temperatures you've given degrees F or C?

I have a cheapish source of 650ºC gloss black paint and was thinking of using that, putting the top coat on thick and rubbing sugar into the top coat. Then when dry I can wash it in water and the sugar will dissolve away leaving me a textured finish. Has anyone else tried this or have other tricks like this?

Oops thats 550 degrees Fahrenheit = 287 degrees Celsius. so it should be good.

Never heard of the old sugar trick. after you try it post a pic & let us know how that works out. The only other way I can think of is once its sprayed wet use a waded up plastic bag or a piece of carpet & dab / press it into the soft paint. (my finger prints and blue jeans usually do a fine job of adding texture to soft paint & always in the most conspicuous spot !)
