Try that maybe the corn nut is two piece but you have a dremel or an angle grinder just stop short of the threads on two sides then give one half a twist with the vise grip

Two piece acorn nut is the same thing I was thinking. A lot of small car wheel lug nuts are like this. It may just be the cover spinning.
