XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono"

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> she's alive!

Hey! What happened with this bike? Finished already? You are building an incredible machine!

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> she's alive!

Thanks, CRQ. Not much progress at all. I have a pre-made seat, not yet mounted. The exhaust is being redesigned. It was a little misaligned with possible interference with the rear tire's vertical travel. I donated the Fmf muffler to my son's cb100. I bought an identical second one for me but the can is polished and it is new. I need more practice fabing/welding the exhaust anyway. No real good excuses. Just busy with life/kids/house, especially during the summer. I did work on the shop, adding a sub panel, T8 lighting, 220 line for the compressor and a dedicated 20amp line for the my new-to-me Lincoln SP125 welder. I'll take some pics tonight where it's at and post tomorrow.

That sounds fair enough for me ;)

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> she's alive!

Another infrequent update. Busy busy busyyy (with other stuff)!

Anyway, some shots in the garage. Still need to hang a couple of T8's over the parking half of the garage. The workspace half is done.

The only new items are the cafe seat (still needs mounting tabs welded and trimmed),

Here, notice I have almost 10 minutes of break in.
About half was idling to get in a few heat cycles.
Other half was riding it at part throttle around the block to do a "shake down" run.

At higher throttle input, it misses a bit. Maybe due to a 110 jet. Remember, it is a 26mm carb tho. Cool thing about these bigger PD XL carbs is that I can swap main jets without removing it from the motor! I drain the carb and remove a large 17mm cap on the bottom for easy access to the main jet. Nice for tuning it in! I changed it to a 100. I'll check it again once I have the new exhaust fabbed. If it still misses, I need to remember what RPM it occurred.

That's it for now. Thanks for looking.

Your bike is really sweet bro! Love everything you have done! Those rearsets look killer! What kind of speedo are you using? Where did you get it? You MUST finish her soon! jajaja

Thanks! I appreciate it! Like I said prior, I'm in no rush and want to take my time. I like the process. Besides, once it's done, the fun (mostly) is over.

The rearsets are from Durgam_K here at this forum. The speedo is a stock CB100 in good condition. I was going to go with a electronic modern speedo but I really like the CB part as it reminds me of my yoot (youth)!

Anyway, sorry. It's done when it's done. Once I get it all fitted, I take it all apart and finish it (PC, paint, plate, etc). This is still the dry fit stage. Need to make sure it all assembles correctly with all needed brackets, good fitment, etc. I'll likely re-harness it too to clean up the wiring.

I get it; take your time and enjoy your project! ;)
Just be sure to let us know if there is some progress

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> she's alive!

Ok, I'll try to get better at updating. Winter is fast approaching and it's been almost a year. I'll post the whole build here even if there are huge gaps in updates.

I'm on a few other forums so I get distracted easily. Which forum I'm at depends what's sparking interest or what I'm actively working on. The forums I check out are: cb125 yahoo, cb400f yahoo, Ducati Monster DMF, BMW e46, garage journal and lately, the Pelican Porsche 911 board. I used to be on the cb160 and the SuperHawk 305 forums. But since I no longer have those bikes, I drop out. This board is cool for the fact the no matter what bike you have, you can count on expert info. You don't really need bike specific forums but those forums are useful being so focused.

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> she's alive!

Unfortunately, no. Since the bike is in the garage w/ winter upon us, I won't make much progress until spring. Last winter, I worked in the basement shop. Now, the remaining work requires welding, painting and basically work that can't be done indoors. Also, I have a couple of other bikes from friends I have to work on ahead of mine. I will post when I finish the new exhaust, which is up next.

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> she's alive!

Yup, almost here in Michigan too! I can't wait to jump on the little Honda! Now, the Duc is in need of some work. But soon, I will be on it. I know, I've been away for a long time.

Texasstar - I like the 200! I'm on board now! I've really been missing some action here!

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> she's alive!

I've been out of it for awhile now. Time to get my head back in this bike. Finally got some time to weld up the new exhaust. I found a tab kit on eBay and welded it on. Got the MIG settings working better now (was bird pooping due to a low power setting).

For the front half of the exhaust, I welded the stock head pipe to an FMF stainless pipe (XR100). Then used the tab kit to connect them.

Next up, I'll fab up the pipe and muffler attaching brackets. Also, working on a steel humpy seat from a Yamaha tank and some stainless plate.

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> exhausting work...

Did you ever get your cam chain sorted out in a permanent fashion? I am looking at tossing the 200 head on the stock cb100 but am worried about needing to remove a link or two from the stock chain.

Bike is looking great! I am shamelessly going to copy your engine paint scheme, it is fantastic!

Re: XL/CB100 cafe - "Mini-Mono" >> exhausting work...

Yes, the cam chain had to be a 98 link. The 100 was too loose, even with the tensioner all the way tight. I ended up using the 98 link at full loose on the tensioner. I didn't remove links, just order the correct chain. Are you using a cb100 piston and cylinder too? Better rethink your plan if so. The compression will be way low now since the new head will have a bigger chamber volume. Anyway, thanks for following. I copied the paint too from the engine forum, so no problem.

So, I've decided to put a stop to this project. I've got another bike ready to go (CB350) and I can only have one vintage bike (wifey rules) at a time. So, keep in tune as I disassemble the bike to sell off some parts. I am keeping a few bits for the new bike and some for just hoarding. I'll post the list of parts for sale in the Selling forum as soon as I can. Sorry to disappoint those that were following.

Greetings. Love your build. Making one myself. May I ask exactly which bridgestone tire those are. Thanks Greg. The Shinkos I now have are to heavy

Thanks Divot! Look at the pic halfway down page 3. Bridgestone BT39 racing tires made for the CB50r. 2.50x18.
