So I got this thing running but I am getting a popping sound and some spray out of the little air filters that connect to hoses that go in at the top of the block. While its running Im also getting a little popping out of the exhaust. The popping from the filters occurs while I'm trying to get it started up. Any thoughts?

Try flipping your kill switch back and forth a bunch of times to clean off the contacts. That might help.

Sounds like your timing may be off a little. Adjust your cam chain (warm), then your valves (cold), then set your timing. In that order. What ignition are you running? Sounds like your carbs mix screws need adjusted. Idle it down as slow as you can get it, unhook one spark plug and turn screw in and out until you get the highest rpm. Do the same on both sides. If you have electronic ignition ground a plug to the head before starting it. On the hoses to the head, you can put brake check valves, from an auto store, on them and point them into your pods. They will quit leaking when the oil level goes down.

1. Check your carb boots for air leaks. If you need new ones use these guys http://jbmindustries.com/index.html, much better than anyone else I've found.

2. Make sure carbs are squeeky clean, the carb guide at the 650 garage, http://xs650temp.proboards.com/index.cgi?, is great and can be printed out for reference. If you're running open pipes you may have to rejet.

3. Then do cam chain, valves and timing.

4. If you are running points, dump them and get a Pamco ignition set up from Mike's XS. Best money I ever spent on my XS.

5. Sit back, have a beer, then double check everything.
