XS400 Green Bastard - SOLD! er, replaced

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard - it's alive! now with vid

Still fighting the carbs. And guess what? The rear mc decided to go tits-up out of the blue. A good bit of paint on the swingarm is ruined. It's just one thing after another with this bike. Done with the headache!

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard - she's on thin ice!!!

Oh dude, I'm just beyond frustrated. I get one thing dialed and another fails. Like clockwork. I'm just sort of under the gun to get her finished before I leave for the summer. This slew of last-minute parts breakage is aggravating.

Alright, well after a couple quick calls, I got a new (to me) motor lined up. Even after the rebuild, the engine has low compression. The valves appeared in fine shape, but as they're the only thing I didn't touch, I suspect they're my problem. Who cares though. I'm starting fresh.

Hang in there fella. That paint job is awesome. I love that scheme. It'll be worth it in the end.

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard - she's on thin ice!!!

Ringo, how hard was the 750 suspension swap to do, was it a direct fit? I have a DOHC 400 and i just got pod filters for it and I want to do dual emgo shortys on it, I know you have a SOHC but what did you change on your carbs, what jet size did you go with (main and pilot?)
(anyone else who can help me here that would be great some one said change the mains to 130.)
Thanks in advance.

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard - she's on thin ice!!!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Your bike looks great. I love to look at other peoples XS400's. It helps me figure out what I want to do on mine. I keep coming back to look at yours. It's close to what I want to do too mine. Don't give up! It would be a waste to get rid of such a beutifull bike.
I really like the XS750 tank. How did you mount it?

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard - she's on thin ice!!!

this white heat wrap...its killer!!!!!! looks realy awesome!!!!

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard - she's on thin ice!!!

Thanks guys. Haven't had any free time in the last few weeks with the move to CA, but I should be around somewhat more regularly now.

GodJocky- The 750 suspension was a direct swap. Just be sure to use the 750 bearing kit, and not the 400 one. The DOHC and SOHC carbs use different jet sizes. I think they're the same carbs though. I have the stock 135/42.5 jets and they're running fine. I did change to adjustable slide needles though, so I could go a little bit richer if needed.

Weezy- If we ever get our WiFi hooked up, I'll post a pic of the tank mounting spots. (I'm using a forest service computer right now and don't have a way to get pics onto it...all my pics are on my personal laptop.)

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard

Chris,
Did you get the Bastard running right? I have been waiting for you to show up here again!

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard

Hey Tyler. Yep, got her running pretty good. I fixed a messed up fuel valve-the carbs were struggling to get gas, after all. Just have to dial in the mixture and it should run fine. I need another couple free weekends to replace a few parts, and it'll be game on. You guys getting any good riding weather yet?

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard

Glad to hear it runs well now, especially after all the work you put into the engine!

The weather here is craaaaap! Tonight, 29 degrees and snow. Bozeman got 8 inches a couple days ago. It's ok, though, I have a few bikes to build in the meantime. I also got a new to me XS1100 standard fuel tank, so the one you saw will be going away soon. I should be able to have it done in time for nicer weather.

Let me know how the Bastard tears it up!!

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard

Had to look up that standard tank. That's one sweet looking tank, dude! It'll look sharp on the 1100. Looks like it holds a ton of fuel, too.

8 inches!!! I took off at just the right time!

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard

Thanks. No hurry. The way things are going it'll be awhile before I have to tackle that puzzle.

Re: XS400 The Green Bastard

Hit a bump way too fast yesterday...bottomed out the rear shocks and the tire hit the fiberglass cowl, cracking it in places. Not too bad-nothing a little epoxy can't fix, but makes me wish I had gotten on the ball about new shocks sooner. Oh well, gives me an excuse to work on the bike!

Apart and getting a little detail. The bike seems to like hanging out in the drinking circle.

Re: XS400 Green Bastard

Well, she went down! On both sides, no less. Backstory: A bunch of us have our own house 40 miles from the barracks where we're stationed. We decided it would be fun to go over to the barracks and force a party on the guys who live there. I felt like riding the bike over, so the rest of the guys took a truck and I rode. We pull up, and one of the guys who lives there (one of the more responsible ones too) askes if he can take the bike for a spin. I'm thinking, ah hell, Lee's got a good head on his shoulders, why the hell not. But I also ask him if he's sober. "yep" he says; I hand him the keys and he's off.

Well, turns out old Lee was a bottle of wine and a few beers deep by the time we showed up. Hearing that, I hopped in someone's truck in a panic and went looking for him. Sure as shit, I see him pushing her along the side of the road.

Aparrently he dropped it while turning around, and when he tried to pick it up, he dropped it on the other side. Fuck me.

Damage wasn't too bad though. Bent bars, broke rearsets on both sides, broke mirror, scratched engine cases on both sides, chipped paint on tank and made a small dent where the bar hit the tank. On the plus side, he bought me new tarozzi rearsets and bars. So, lesson learned on my part, and at least Lee's unharmed.

Re: XS400 Green Bastard - friends don't let friends ride drunk

Sorry to hear about the bike Ringo. At least it's fixable and your buddy's ok though.

My bro-in-law let someone ride his V-Rod and they did almost the same thing. Except they hit an 8" high curb dead on at about 55mph. Flipped the bike and did about 16 grand in damage.

Re: XS400 Green Bastard - friends don't let friends ride drunk

That's rough!

Guess I got away easy! He only did maybe $400 worth or so. And he wanted to pay for it all. I'm just as much to blame as him though, but I did let him get the rearsets.

Re: XS400 Green Bastard - friends don't let friends ride drunk

Man! I am glad he and the Bastard are ok, but it still sucks just the same. I have started a little rule about letting other people ride my bikes since this spring. My cousin was getting his permit, and I let him do all the practicing and testing on Isadora. We went for a celebratory ride after he got his license, during which he entered a parking lot too hot and dumped her in the gravel. Fortunately he only wrecked the headlight bezel and the tach housing, and scratched up the levers. He was ok. Since then, though, I pay a little more attention to who is riding and where.

Glad to here its going back together!

Re: XS400 Green Bastard - friends don't let friends ride drunk

Yeah, definitely clamping down on who I even let sit on it, let alone ride.

I may have some paint work for you this fall though! I'm considering respraying the tank when I get home. Think you could get a hold of some Jaguar "British Racing Green"?
