Seat pan and cowl...made this outta sheet metal and just have it tack welded together so far....trying to decide on what to us to cover the seams up...might just try some gold bondo. Made the copper tail piece and have a small copper spade to throw on the back as well

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover

Too much...... Can't take it all in at once.....

Got a camera, huh!? Love that Yamaha etched in up top. Everythings lookin good

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

Got my front brake caliper stripped down to bare metal and then painted same color as the middle of the disc. lookin pretty good! Found an XS Heritage special tank which is a little big smaller then the regular XS tank. I stripped the many layers of paint off yesterday, basically down to bare metal now. Need to dig out some old petcocks and get em workin good and install a gas cap. Tanks has a couple small dings that'll need some filler, but I picked up some Bondo Gold and will hopefully get some done tomorrow eve. Will take some pics then as well...mock up is startin to look alot better...starin to see the vision a bit .

Got some piston rings and clips ordered from DirectXS the other day...came to 86$ after tax and shipping...not bad. Plan on cleaning and lapping my valves and honing the barrels while I have the top end off. I have a new cam chain to put in as well. Cam chain guides look relatively new...Anything else I should do while its apart??

Gonna send an XS kicker to Dime City probably sometime next week (when i actually have some money), so they can try and make up an XS version of their "chuck kicker".

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

Lapped all my valves and cleaned all the old carbon out of the head...honed out my cylinders and went to put my new rings in only to find that directXS sent me the wrong ones. 2 sizes over!! Bahhhh! Thought I was gonna have er back together and at least in the frame again. Oh well shit happens...sent em an email and they said their stock was wrong, so theyre gonna send me the right ones as soon as they get em in...hope thats not too long!

Got a little bondo on the tail peice and its startin to look a bit smoother...another application or two should do it. then a lil fiberglass inside the bump for strength. It's been slow going lately cause I'm in the middle of buying a house! man oh man there's a lot of shit you gotta do to buy a house!! Its like a roller coaster ride of stress, happiness, anger, excitement and dreams haha. But the kicker is that the house comes with a nice lil shop with a loft on top that I'll make into a music studio ANNNNNDDD....a 1978 VW westfalia camper van with 89,000 miles....slime green!!

As far as the bike goes, I have to make a tank/seat mount and finish the body work on the tank and seat as well. Then get my rings in and chuck the engine back in...after that is some small assembly things and some finishing details!! cant wait!

yesterday was almost biking weather...most of the snow was gone, what was left was on its way out and melting...today i wake up to 36cm and counting...shizah!!

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

lookin good. I like the bar clamp. Your garage now is pretty sweet cant wait to see the new one. Keep it up.

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

Those wheels look... umm.... how do I put this?......

SICK SICK SICK!!

If they turn up missing it's cuz I stole them!! Just kidding.. They wouldn't fit my bike. :(

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

hey thanks guys! Yeah I'm pretty pleased with the wheels...up close they r a bit rough, but long as u stay a foot or so away haha.

This garage is actually where i work...It's gonna be nice to have my own shop to just walk out the door to! It makes for long days when you work on bikes for 9 hours and then stay at work when everyone leaves and work on your own bike for 4 or 5 hours...man oh man! It'll be wayy nicer being able to go home and have supper then go out in my own shop and have a couple wobbly pops and work on my bike!

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

THE GOOD: Got me engine back together!! She's lookin good! Lapped valves and new seals, new cam chain, honed the cylinder and new rings and gaskets! Engine mounts all painted and she's ready to go back in the frame. Gonne do the valve clearances and and a compression check before she goes back in just to be sure everything is right!

THE BAD: I injured my self takin a front end out of an arctic cat the other day though...real sore right side of chest, specially when i reach or bend over...looks like no worky today...but also means engine wont be back in til the weekend probably...oh well good progress was made!

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

Hey Tunz, that sucks about the hurtness. Hope it isn't serious. You are going to leave the copper pieces raw? I like the look of it natural. Looking good, the fresh engine should rip this summer. I am definaltely going to ride down to Toad's this spring to see her in person.

keep up the good work.

Maritime.

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

hey man, yeah plannin on leaving the copper raw...painting the cowl...i got some body filler on it now...its takin a good while and lots of sanding to it smooth, if i cant get er nice in the next lil bit i might opt for a "pre-made" fiberglass seat...didnt want to, but maybe haha

yeah we should def try and hit up a "cafe run" at some point - would be fun man! I just cant wait to hear my bike run again!!

upon doing the tear down of the engine and whatnot i noticed a couple things that should help performance...first off the oil return pipe to the head had a good pinch in it where someone had put a pair of pliers on it or sumthin, so that wasnt good. But I replaced it with a better one from a spare engine I had. Secondly, one of the intake manifolds was upside down haha...I thought it felt weird taking my carbs in and out! haha...corrected that! Obviously my cam chain was a bit stretched, so that is corrected! Man it's a tight fit putting new cam chains on an XS! My valve seals were pretty loose as well and i have a different/cleaner set of carbs with some slightly bigger jets...so hopefully she'll howl!!

cheers man!

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

It's Alive!! Got the engine back in and running today! Started right up after just a couple kicks...now just gotta tie up the loose ends...tank mount...seat...lights.......BOOYAH! Much less noises comin from the engine now as well!

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS/Video

It sounds GREAT Tunz. Can't wait to see it finished.

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS/Video

that seat pan is wicked! i really really dig those vintage grips... what you should do ont he controls is wire wheel them. it will leave a rough effect but still clean. get a fine wire wheel and go all in the same direction. awesome progress she sounds goooooD!

Re: XS650 Cafe makeover...PICS/Video

Thanks guys! glad you r diggin it! Man oh man I have changed my mind so many times on how I was gonna do things with this bike! I guess thats just part of it eh!

JRK...I should def try that idea with the hand controls...I really wanted the rough/weathered look for sure...gotta find myself a real nice fine wire wheel...u think brass wheel would be best?

cheers
