XS650 Electric Start Wiring

Hi,
Im reaching the finishing stages on my 78 xs650, and am thinking i want to set up the electric start as the kick is a bit awkward with the position of the rear sets. Anyway, the starter motor was on the engine when i bought it, but there is no wiring at all. This is my first time when it comes to electrics and wiring, so I need a really dumbed down version of how to set this thing up. I bought a starter button which mounts on the frame, and from my understanding i need to wire from starter>20a relay>switch and from the relay to the battery? What type/size wire do I need, where do I ground the circuit? sorry for all the dumb questions

It's about the most simple circuit on the bike.

Battery Positive Terminal > Starter Relay > Starter Motor with heavy wire - like 10GA or so.

The two little terminals on the Starter Relay run to the momentary starter button with regular 14GA or whatever wire.

The starter motor is grounded by its being bolted to the engine. The battery of course should already be grounded to the frame.

When you press the button, it activates the electromagnetic switch inside the relay connecting the heavy gauge wires directly from the battery to the starter (no fuse anywhere on this line). The starter will run till you let go of the button.

That's it.

Tim... What about the safty relay component? Is that not needed? I'm wiring mine up right now, and a bit confused on the (3) 14 gauge wire on the starter relay. One blue/white one is red/white... Then there is another red one coming out on the positive 10 gauge wire. The manual shows the blue/white one gping to Thr starter button and Thr red
/white one to the safty relay. Which is how I was going to wire it, as soon as I figure out which component is the safty relay...

Not technically needed. The safety relay is just there to keep you from hitting the start button when the engine is already running and/or prevent the starter from engaging when the bike is in gear. You can remove it if you want to.
