Matt, thanks for posting the link to this thread on the Ohio page. Excellent stuff! I wish I could have seen some photos midprocess. I love that you put the ignition in the headlamp. The minimalist look is great!
Mike,
Unfortunately, I'm not real good about updating my progress- the only digital camera I have is my crappy cell phone, that and I can never remember my login/pword for photobucket! Putting the ignition in the bucket required no rewiring, filled a hole already there and only required two small holes drilled for the screws to hold it in- couldn't have been easier. I stole the idea from a guy over on the 650 garage site. Still haven't got into a school yet to start on the track day thing. Still hope to but you know how it is with money and time...
No worries on the updates. I was just curious. I understand how it is. I'm glad to hear that it was easy to wire the ignition into the headlamp. I've been toying with the idea of eventually putting the speedo/tach into the headlamp, but I might do the ignition instead. I don't want to spring for a high dollar digital combined speedo/tach at the moment, so it makes more sense for me to move the ignition. It will still clean up the overall look of the bike.
I'm excited for you to eventually get on the track. It's always good to see quality people living their dreams. As someone who works for a non-profit, I get the time and money challenges. Keep the dream alive ;-)
Ok, so are these things ever really finished? Just scored some Loaded gun rearsets off CL. TKAT fork brace order goes in the mail tomorrow. SS brake lines and led turn signals round out the updates for this season. Will try to post picks as work is accomplished.
Re: XS650 - She's finished (NOT)! new pics 6/30/12
Good day yesterday- finally pulled the swingarm and installed bronze bushings, bit of a POA. Installed and adjusted rearsets. These will take some getting used to...
Rearsets will really 'complete' the bike, and the fork brace will improve handling a ton. The bronze bushings/fork brace are great additions. When you can swing it cartridge emulators in the front end and fresh shocks in the rear will really help things along.
Already has improved shocks on the rear. I've used the old PVC spacer trick to tighten up the front end and set preload/sag. May eventually pop for progressive springs like I did on my 850. I think your right about the rearsets finishing the look/feel/sportiness of it. Now I'm thinking the pipes don't look quite right! I don't think these projects ever really end...
Still need to:
-reinstall turn signals
-stainless brake lines
-fork brace (ordered)
-thinking about relocating the ignition key to the frame- currently in headlight bucket.
-if i move the key will mount the bike speedo on the bucket- currentl on the center of the bars. would like to eventually buy a gps instead.
Actually works pretty well. It's a cheapo Bell i picked up at Target for $10. I superglued the magnet to the flange of the front wheel (i have the flanged aluminum hoops) and stuck the receiver with RTV on a little bracket held on by a fender bolt. Ran the wire along the brake line to hide it a little. They calibrate by wheel diameter, so it's easy to get it close enough to keep you safe from speeding tickets! I've had it read pretty close all the way up to about 70mph or so without issue. Been on there almost 2 years now- and still the original battery too. Only down side is it's not lit for night riding, but you can buy one that is. I just stay with the flow of traffic if I'm out at night, as I would never disregard the traffic laws and speed... ;D
Looks great Matt I've seen a few people just using a gps for speed. I've been thinking about it, after riding dirt bikes for years i never use the tach anyways.
SOLD! After 14 years, a friend of a friend took her off my hands last week for a fair price. All sides are happy. She's still running great, handled a few 100+ mile days this spring & summer with nary and issue. I'll miss her, but been thinking of going in a somewhat different direction on two wheels next year. In the mean time, I've still got the 850!
