xs650 wheel lace question

beater

Been Around the Block
ok, I searched, but I didn't get it.

I have an opportunity to get some aluminum xs650 wheels. rear is drum offset I know, so that should be ok to lace to my kz400 rear drum hub. What about the front. I am a spoke wheel noob on motorcycles as far as building my own. I know some wheels don't mind if you lace to disc from drum and some do.

Has anyone laced these fronts to disc? (single)

thanks in advance.

So let me make sure I'm clear...

You found some of the mid-70's shouldered alloy XS650 wheels, correct? These are 36 hole, drum rear, disc front.

You should be fine lacing these to most any 36 hole drum brake rear and disc front hubs, but you'll need the right spokes. You might get lucky if your hubs are the same diameter as the XS650's, and use stock XS650 spokes (which can be bought reasonably priced new from MikesXS.net) or you can order custom spokes from Buchanan's.

Another option is to simply fit the XS650 wheels complete to your bike.

All XS650's, except the earliest XS1, had front disc brakes. I would think the only thing that matters is the number of spoke holes , the angle of the spokes when laced to the rim and the length of the spoke. There's a pretty good tutorial on lacing a XS wheel over on 650 Choppers.com.

yep - you are spot on.

I wish I had the whole wheels, as I would be able to space those out/adapt them easier. Even though I have laced/trued quite a bit on bicycles, these wheels are scary to me for some reason. I can't afford to drop the coin to have them done professionally, so same spokes would be a god send.
