I popped my vacuum tester sync tool made out of two beer bottles on tonight and just tuned it over to find the left carb has a lot more vacuum than the right even with both butterflies totally at the minimum rest point/totally closed.

Maybe your Franken-sync tester is not working?

Seriously, you have a twin - you just need this:

One continuous tube with NO joins anywhere.

Every time people try and over complicate this system it turns to shit.

I've not been able to sync it at idle because, as I mentioned, I've not been able to get it to idle. I'm going to check the valves next and I like the constant tube method, thanks.

Check the valves and do a compression test.

If compression is down with the valves set properly you may have a burnt/bent valve or a broken piston ring(s).

Thanks. I think I've been superficial with the engine as I bought as a rebuilt unit with just the stater gears to sort out. I'm kicking myself for not checking everything before assembly.

Well made some good progress! I should have never trusted the guy how sold me a rebuilt engine!!! Stupid me thought that if he'd rebuilt it he knew what he was doing. When I checked the valves all but one had no clearance, ZERO! No wonder it was difficult to start. Anyway now starts and idles, but it's running rich and I'm it hangs when I let off the throttle but that may just be due to the slightly bigger main jets and the fact that I have one washer under the needle? Think I'll go back to stock after lunch and give that a try.
