Our new gov has a somewhat heavy hand and as part of his austerity plan he has decided to eliminate the state percent for art program. OK, that's fine, I live within a budget, too. However, I'm in the short term, very happy. Here are a few of the pieces that the committees bought.

All together, five pieces were purchased for three universities.

these are neat abstract. Can you explain them a bit, as in is there some inspiration for them? Looks like flight to me, but what do i know?

Yeah, you called it.

The image suggests birds and fish often. These are mobiles. Every part has the ability to move. The bottom one is called 'Scattered Flight' which is more the design name than an individual piece. I've made variations on it up to 32' in diameter x 14' high with over 70 moving parts. This one is 4'h x 10' diameter.

The yellow and red one is from a series where I make several mobiles, arrange them, then make the frame. Because of the common frame this style has very different characteristics from the Scattered Flight. This style is more technical in production.

In high school art class the assignment was mobiles with Calder as the reference. I've been making them since, professionally for nearly 20 years.

very cool! I dig them very much. Are this hung wherever the patron decides, or do you request they be hung near an entrance of exit so when a door opens and air flows in or out that they move? I think it would be pretty neat to see in action.

If you were to go to my website, click on mobiles, then click on the video of 'A State of Altered Flight' you can see how that one behaves. Every installation seems to be different and no two pieces seem to act alike. Some are smooth and stately and others may be busy. I think it has as much to do with the ventilation as anything I do.

Tim,

The red mobile pictured in this thread is about 44"h x 44"w, the 'Scattered Flight' with the black background, is 4'h x 10'w. I have made mobiles as deep as 20' and as wide as 32'.
