Yamaha XV250 Bobber "Old Greg"

The smaller yamaha 250 cruisers over here actually came equipped with one fake exhaust and one that housed a 2 into 1 which was actually a smaller diameter pipe than the outside pipe put on for looks. Was that a similar thing on this bike? If so, the elements have probably done it a service by tusting into 'em.

lol yeah that is the way this one is, I just dont get why they didnt just make a 90* turn and make the second pipe functional. it is all there, instead they make some crazy loopy thing that goes down under the engine and ties into the first pipe :p . oh well I am going to have a custom 2 into 1 exhaust that drops down and goes strait under the bike and kicks out to the side when it gets to the back tire.

turn it into this

Looks like you could use some help from a certain funky ball of tits from outer space!

It looks like it does have some potential, though, interested to see what you make of Old Gregg!

and at least the bike doesn't have a mangina.... or does it?

So I drew up a really rough mockup of what I am looking to do. Dont make fun of how crude it is (I know what you're thinking, here comes Old Greg, he's a scaly man fish ;D ) it is just a quick sketch ::) . Anyway let me know what you think.

So got some more done as far as disassembly goes, wiring out and most of the other guts and worthless parts. About mid way through I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I realized that my head was about 4" away from a big old Cane Spider, :p scared the crap out of me. It was about the size of a credit card.

I also found some more concerning rust that I am going to have to patch. but al in all it is coming along, slowly. The frame didn't look like I expected when I got the tank off either. Let me know what you think of the handle bars, I put them on there just for fun but I really like the look.

I just remembered another thing with these bikes is the carb mount. It is frequently cracked and stuffed, even on servicable bikes that are on the road now. The worse it gets though, the worse they run. I'm betting yours will be too and as far as I know that's a visit to MR Yamaha for a replacement. Worth checking out... after you take to the frame. I have to admit though, it's looking like this bike might blow your $500 budget.

There's a pretty nice one in the current V Twin mag. I see some potential for a nice around town scooter.

What do you mean by "stuffed"? Yes the intake manifold boot from the carb that runs into both cylinders has a big crack in it, but there are a bunch on ebay for under $40. Any air leek before the carb wouldn't make that much of a difference I would think, I am going to make sure everything is tight but if there is a small leek I don't see it making a difference.

Hope you have a welder. :p

As far as welding goes Matt I have a friend here that is a master welder, he is going to do all the hardtail work and patching.

JR

WELDING? It doesn't need welding. There's nothing there that can't be stuffed with newspaper and a big dollop of household filler chucked on top.
Jeez.

They've gotten cheaper and more available than last time I looked then. If yours has a crack in it then chuck it and get a new one. It will make a huge diference. The venturi setup in your carb is dialed in to get the right fuel air mix so when that mix goes past the crack it'll draw in more air leaning the mixture. A lean mixture makes your bike run like crap but also makes it run hotter.
You're right that an air leak before the carb is ok, but you don't want one in that carb mount between the carb and the heads.
A cheap fix is to buy some "rescue tape" and wrap it in that. My boots on the CX650E are NLA so I have done that and it works fine.

sweet you do water colors too!

So yesterday I finally got back to tearing down the bike. I stripped everything down to the frame, it took me a while as there was a lot of rusty bolts and screws but I just took my time and got everything off. Found more rust but still nothing that I think is going to be a problem. Here are some photos of the rest of the deconstruction.
27.jpg

My pile of parts :p dont have anywhere to put things, fortunately I am not going to use most of this stuff.
28.jpg

Here is a pic of the cracked intake manifold. I am going to order a new one on ebay, should be about $40.
29.jpg

Hope the carb is salvageable, going to have to get some new parts most likely. going to be fun to see it all cleaned up.

31.jpg

Had some help ;D
32.jpg

So here is how the frame sits now, I am planning on doing away with the swingarm completely. The plan is to just cut out the ends of the swingarm out and weld them in to the end of the of the new bars so as to keep the stock axle and tensioners.
33.jpg

Here is how I want the frame to look.
34.jpg

And a more accurate mockup with the frame corrected.
