hi everyone

I was wondering what the letters for the models actualy mean ( like : XS, RD, XJR, and so on )
can someone enlighten me of their meaning?

thanks Ralph

Why did Buick put GS (Gran Sport) on some of there 90's Regal 4 door sedans? Gran SPORT? A Buick? 4 door? Really? Marketing ploy more than anything else-makes the product seem more special and alluring than it really is. Im waiting for someone to come out with the HoYammasaki 650WTF--Im buying 2.Lol.Merry Christmas all u reprobates.bj

model designation doesn't always mean anything, it could be the planning number for engine design and stem from there. You see Porsche 993 911, 996, 997 are all 911's or BMW E36 S52 M3. Jumbles of numbers. And then sometimes they do mean something like Gran Turismo Internazional, GTI.

merry chistmas to you and everyone else.

ok, a Buick and sport...? what a laugh... I have a tractor, a 'lanz bulldog' which is more sporty than that.

look at that:

Lanz Bulldog anheizen

but it does not explain the letters yamaha is using for their models.

most models from most brands are not even badged with the correct cc. I highly doubt the prefixes mean anything other than sound schnazzy!

It's a fuzzy memory, but I saw the breakdown once. They aren't initials, just designators. For road bikes, R for two stroke, X for four, V for V-type motors, Z adds liquid cooling. Going from a fuzzy recollection that's at least 10 years old:

RD - two-stroke road bike
RZ - two-stroke liquid cooled
XS - four-stroke road
XV - four-stroke V (Virago)
XZ - four-stroke liquid cooled V (Vision)
XVZ - liquid cooled V (four cylinder) (Venture)
XJ, FJ - inline air-cooled fours
FZ, FZR - inline fours, air vs liquid cooled.

I sort of lose it with FZR and YZF, then they throw in an M and I'm hosed. Not sure where SR comes in and SRX is another weird one. Probably ran out of designators, or started incorporating major chassis variances.
