Picked up this XS this morning
The pics make it look a lot better than it is
Just about everything has been painted in hammerite (badly)
The engine runs ok with no rattles or smoke and I'm sure will be fine once the carbs have been stripped and had a good service
I think I've over paid for this one but I couldn't resist the wire wheels
This bkes going to cost lot of money to make it like the last build
I'm jealous, even after owning about a dozen of these, that's a model that has eluded me. They are amazing stock, with some work they are sexy as hell. Good luck, I hope she's a gem....
Spent most of the day trying to remove the Hammerite paint from the engine.
Had limited success with gasket remover and petrol.
I'll try some Nitromors if I can get some tomorrow.
I think this is going to take a while
After some searching I've managed to find some paint stripper it's called Starchem and I had to sign a disclaimer when ordering.
So hopefully it will actually work.
Also had some Triumph carbs delivered seem to be in very good condition.
I fitted them on and they are a big improvement on the original ones
Hopefully with rejetting and setting up they'll be perfect
The only other mods will be fabricating a small lever to operate the choke, and maybe a bespoke cable with a longer inner.
Nice find! You probably didn't over-pay for it...those wheels are as rare as hens teeth nowadays and only came out on the Japanese model I'm lead to believe.
I'm also at the start of an XS750 cafe project so keen to see how you go!
Spent the day with a can of paint stripper, Seachem Synstryp and it actually works.
I'll finish the engine off with wire wool and wire brushes when I get the engine out of the frame.
Took the rocker cover off today, the cams are in very good nick and valve clearence spot on.
The points will be replaced with a Newtronic system.
The bike will be going off to MCS in Colchester on Monday to have an alloy tank made.
Sweet build so far. Those wire wheels are indeed extremely rare. I believe there were around 2,000 sets made world wide but don't quote me on that number. One member from the yamaha forum sold them for a lot of money. I've done just about everything you can do to these bikes. I'm slowly going to convert it to fuel injection and also run a turbo. It probably won't be done until the end of next spring.
I also have several 750 engine parts and some 850 engine parts. Let me know if you need anything. If i don't have it I'll know where you can get it.
Spent the last 3 days refurbishing the brakes.
Had to get new pistons and seal kits, new pads. The brake lines came from a company called Wezmoto.
They look very good quality and were a very good price.
Just got to get some new bleed nipples
The new front brake assembly came from David Silver.
Thanks Ryan
I used a nylon wheel attached to a drill to remove the paint as paint stripper would not touch it.
I then rubbed the calipers down with a few different grades of wet & dry, followed by by polishing with 4 grades of mops and compounds.
MCS have just finished making another tank for me, excellent job.
Wheels will be sent off for rebuilding tomorrow and the fork stanchions for rechroming on Monday.
In the meantime lots of cleaning, painting, polishing.
