your opinions are needed

So I just picked up this 72 CL175 for $50 and don't know what to do with it. Should I keep it mostly stock and just clean it up or rip it apart and build a brat/tracker out of it. It runs but needs the tank cleaned out do to some rust. I am fully aware that I'm entering dangerous waters asking for opinions, but here it goes. please share any pics or ideas. Thanks

Is it titled?

That looks to be fairly clean to begin with. I wouldn't go crazy trying to restore it, but just get it running and riding safely to start with. Then change anything you want.

Yeah, clean title in hand! I already have a 80 CM400 that is cafe racer styled, but this is such a better platform for it. But I really want something that is just down and dirty that I can take anywhere.

Not sure about the smaller CL's, but if that exhaust is in good condition it should sell for good money.

Well, at least the 350 / 360 ones go for decent $$$.

I'd just do the necessary stuff like get it running right, replace all the hoses, new throttle cable, clutch cable, fix the brakes, and new tires. Even the minimal stuff can add up. Or like someone else said, the parts will make your money back and then some money.

Clean it up and get it safe like Rich said. Then you'll have a better platform to build a cafe or brat off of.

Nice score! I love my CL175. It's a great platform for a cheap but quick ride. If you decide you want to chop up the exhaust, I'd be willing to trade you my already chopped CL pipes + cash for them. I also have some CB headers if you're interested.

I think it's in too nice shape to hack up. Get it running, make it nice, change small things to give it a custom touch...indicators, slightly streamlined seat...

W.T.F.!!!! $50 around here will get you a foot peg. It looks like you scored. Are the rims as clean as they look? For what you have invested, you can go in any direction and not get hurt. Any thing you don't use can be sold to help fund the build....

Just lost a bidding war for some cl pipes for my cb175. They went for $275.

I found it while hunting this year. A buddy of mine has access to this huge farm in northeastern Colorado and I spotted it in the shed as we were headed out one morning. So after having plenty of time to myself sitting in the woods, I decided to talk to the owner. He agreed to sell it to me for $50 and a day of labor. Well worth it!!!!

The exhaust is in perfect shape and its my favorite part of the bike. Really the only thing wrong so far is a rust filled tank. How do I do that electrolysis thing again. I can dig around for it but was hoping someone had a quick link.

A day of labor? What kind of labor are you doing for him?

You said you want something "down and dirty"....it's a scrambler already, so take that a couple custom levels higher...make it a stripped-down, bad assed little scrambler or tracker style!

here is some more pics

I had to clean and organize the shed I pulled it out of. It took me about 7 hrs and in the end he was able to park his tracker in there which is what he wanted. Well worth it!!!!

I'm thinking just throw some dirt bike tires on it and pull the fenders. Cut down and recover the seat, then side mount the brake light. Then just fix and clean the rest.
