The GL has a bunch of relays and a transistor that most points bikes of the era did not have. That can make for a very confusing wire trace for most folks. The basc wng of the GL1000 is no different than other point triggered bikes. Make sure points are opening and closing. Not coated with crap or shorting out. Disconnect the starter motor lead, insulate it, turn the key ON (not Aux), Start/Stop ON, and hold the start button while checking through the voltage feed to the start button, then to the coils, then to the points. With points open you should ge cse to battery voltage to the point leads. Of course you have to bypass the clutch and neutral switches, but I think you've done that already. Once you get that sorted you should have spark when you hook the starter motor back up. Then you need to check the same items without the starter button pressed. This sends the voltage through the ballast resistor to reduce load on the points and coils when running. Then make sure the condensers are connected to kerp from rapidly wearing the points.
So it wont spark if the clutch isnt pulled ? Even if its in neutralIf I remember correctly, my issue was the clutch lever switch...forget what its called..."safety nuetral switch"? must be pulled in to start..unless I have an issue also lol.
Both wires are green but one has a red strip and the have bullet connectors on one side and the side in the picture the have solder on them but I opened my switch and i dont see anything where they would connect tho but if I press the start button and hold those two wires together my starter clicks the starter disconnect according to my diagram is the only thing that has thise two colors and the other photo is where they connect to the harnessWhat do they connectors look like?
My clutch lever isnt hooked up and I was able to turn my bike over on SundayI wanna say they connect to the clutch lever.
But now my bike wont turn over and I dont know where those wires goSounds right, then I get confused lol. Your bypassing the switch at the lever, but not sure if that creates another problem. Your bike can turn over and not have spark also....I had that for a bit.
Is touching them together grounding them ?Grab the green/red wire from the solenoid and ground it. Now it doesn't need to be in neutral or have the clutch pulled in. Be careful.
