1976 Honda MR175 21st Century Refresh

Pause for a station identification:

Here is the snail pipe. I am the third owner. The original owner installed the snail pipe estimated at 1976 or within the first two years of owning it. If anyone has seen one or knows who made it, I’d be much obliged.

Sweet build!

As you ride for longer periods, does the gas get pretty warm from that pipe? I could see a heat shield being desireable under there.

How do you like the VAPE? I was looking to do that with my DT3

I like the Vape a lot on my RD. It makes wiring super easy on a dirt bike and it's a 12v conversion on top of it all. Smooths out the lights when battery-less.

Hadn't thought about heat yet. Got it fired up, but couldn't get anywhere close on the tune with the stock carb or 28mm VM style Mikuni from an RD. I ordered a VM32, which I think will make life much happier.

Bought an $18 headlight from Treatland to
cover me until I find an OG headlight that I can afford.

I like this bike a lot, Irk.. are the guts to the motor all stock? Will probably be a little rocket-- should name it Mommy's Little Monster lol

Haha. I love Social Distortion. Just an 050 bore and Wiseco piston. I'll probably end up porting it, but I want to ride it first.

Nice build, Eric. I was going to ask about heat as well, but from the aspect of the pipe being so close to the engine cooling fins. Must be that's not a problem?

The original owner installed the snail pipe within a year of buying the bike in 1976 and ran it the entire time he and his son owned it. I assume it wasn't an issue, especially considering the stock pipe is a high pipe and there's long been a high pipe expansion chamber on the market. Just the snail pipe is rare.

I suppose the thing rarely is standing still at idle and probably never in traffic and sitting at stop lights. Bottom line is that it's a great little bike and the snail pipe adds to the cool factor exponentially.

Agreed. Wish I could find more information on it. Ephraim owned it before me and he couldn't track down info either. All we have is what the son said, but he only remembers it being on the bike, not where it came from.

Since I’m running a Mikuni VM32, the stock air box tube no longer fits. Preferring to keep an airbox, I printed a tube in 95A TPU.

Nice. how fuel resistant is the TPU?
As the chart goes, good resistance to gasoline and diesel fuel, but not recommended for ethyl alcohol. Ambient heat resistance to 120C/248F.
