Hey.. never mind that.. I know Karen... not only can she out ride most of us on the track, she also a HOTTIE!!

The actual meaning is from the fifties in the u.s. when the american motorcycle association stated in one of their newsletters that 99% of motorcyclists were good god fearing family lovin folk. In the late 50's early 60's the "outlaw" clubs adopted the term 1% as a big ol' F&$K YOU to the a.m.a. who wouldnt let them join or attend their races and meets....

Just a little note...... The Wild Ones was banned from England until the 1980s. I have read that Father Shergold of the "59" Club had a copy which he would show to the club on occasion. Actually there was no riot at Hollister. By eye witness accounts, the local police blocked off the main road so some of the guys could drag race through town. The only real trouble came when the state police, who didn't know the local boys had set up the roadblocks for the races, got into the mix. In the end, only a few, as expected, were arrested mostly for being public drunk. The life magazine article was a sham and the pictures, especially the most famous one, were staged. To many of you it would seem odd that the local police would do something like allow drag racing through town. Remember, this was the 1940's, a war just ended, and people had much to celebrate. Not to mention the fact that drag racing was probably not against the law at this time, or not on the books anyway. Just my take on things..........Dewey ;).

FWIW, Brando rode his own personal Triumph in that movie.

At one point, you see Lee Marvin imitating riding a motorcycle by twisting both hands.
For you youngsters- that's because he's working the gas and spark retard, which the American big twins used instead of a decompressor for starting and idling.

locOleoN, very good reply, definitely got all the basics down correctly.

Having been there, done that, allow to me add a couple of more points. First, unless you've actually prospected and won membership in a 1%er club (Hell's Angels, Outlaws, Pagans, Bandidos, etc.), I seriously suggest you not get tempted to add one of those to your leathers. It's a real nice way to have some otherwise decent, much bigger and more numerous than you, guys take real quick offense. And you'll have about 30 seconds discussion in which to remove the patch and turn it over, or matters will escalate a bit. And it will be removed.

It's a mark of pride that one has turned his back on the mundane world and lives for his club and his brothers. And it's earned.
