CB175 road race bike for 250cc class

Hello

Anyone tried to take an cb175 up to close 250cc. Thinking 61 -62mm bore? Have started an project with kawasaki 550 liners and some race pistons from Indonesia with high dome and 14mm pin. Have not recived the pistons yet, but they looks promising.
Anyone been down the same ally before?

There's a few of us have done exactly that. Our last one was 240cc IIRC and used modified Wiseco 61 (or was it 61.5mm ?) Kawasaki pistons. we used a CB200 head with better valve guide seals than a 175 and bigger fins, but the ports are almost identical to any later type (vertical) 175 head.

We welded and machined the head to get higher compression with a low dome piston, but there are alternate ways to do it.

With a short stroke motor, it has the potential to rev and needs to rev to make enough power, but poor valve train control and a 360 degree crank hinder that.

Think about a 180 degree crank and slipped cam chain guides. For carbs it depends on the rules. I have used CB77 (26mm) carbs on a 175 cc motor and CB750 carbs (28mm) on a CB77 350 and 26mm mikuni VM series on the 240, but Keihin CR are probably the best if the budget is generous enough.

Our 175 made about 21hp and a good 250 should make around 30 at which time the frame will twist, forks will be inadequate and reliability will start to suffer but that comes with the territory. Frames can be braced, there are better forks and wheels available, so go for it.

I'd be interested to see what pistons you end up using. I don't like old type high dome pistons, so I tend to machine a squish band and match the cylinder head squish angles which also need to be changed. megacycle do some great camshaft grinds.

Where are you located and what are the rules for your local Vintage race organization?
 
Have some of these pistons coming my way. Size 61mm.
Plan is to use them in Kawasaki 58mm liners bored out to 61mm in machined cylinder.
Profile is something that might work. Probably have to reduce deck hight by 1-2mm.
Have also an engine build with suzuki 58,25mm pistons in 200 liners bored out ongoing.

When they arrive, you will be able to compare them to your 175 pistons and workout how much metal can be machined off to make them the shape you need.

If they are way too tall, you could think about using CB200 rods or barrels or both and then things start to get confusing. Too many variables.
 
Will post some pictures where we can compare an discuss these pistons. Will line them up with suzuki 58,25mm and stock pistons.
Just have to arrive at home first and collect some parcels at the post office. Still at work offshore!

Here is an update on 61mm pistons for cb175 engine.

Deck hight is the same. Dome width is the same.

Standard dome hight is 8mm
61mm pistons 4mm

As far as I can understand dome hight will reduce the comp.

Dome hight on cb200 pistons is 6,5mm.

Will a cb200 top raise comp?

Lots of meat at the top of that piston. You can machine acouple of mm off the barrel and piston to increase crown height and you can also machine it at say 15 degrees to get a squish band and then machine the head at 16 degrees out to a diameter of 61.5mm as a place to start.
 
Anybody knows if the combustion chamber is the same volum on 175cc and 200cc cylinder head? Will there be any other advantage then better cooling due to bigger cooling fins?

More or less the same dimensions but a different "squish band" to match the 55mm piston. Ports are the same IIRC but valve guides and seals are better. You could use CB200 guides in a 175 vertical head. If you have a late model CB175 head, I would use it.
