CL100/CB125s mash up

Hi guys, I'm a new member here and have decided to start my own build after stalking the website for sometime.

I've decided to do this the wrong way buy buying a frame and going from there. I probably would not do this like this again...or maybe I would.

I'm a Tig welder/fabricator buy trade so Im not afraid to hack and slash if need be which this project required quite a bit because I've never worked on project like this before.

What I came home with was a CL100 frame and swing arm, a fork and triple tree from a larger bike and a gas tank that was two small. I think the guy that I got it from had originally planned on doing a bobber.

I it seemed everything was good but I was wrong. The swing arm had a slight bend in it and the rear shock mounts were pretty much trash.

I formed and redid the mounts using 12mm bolts but was not happy at all. So the project stalled a bit while I searched for parts and finished school.

Then I scored huge and got fired up on the bike again. I found a mostly intact CB125s for 100 bucks on craigslist. The motor was missing quite a few parts, the tank was filled with rotten kreem, and the front fender was tweaked. I didn't plan on running a stock front fender if at all as im still on the fence on that one.

I started swapping parts to see what I had to work with.

I decided to have a crack at the tank and see what damage I could do. I started by drilling two one inch holes in the bottom so I could get the big chunks out. I then patched them up and worked on the dents in the tank. Follow by several soaks on muriatic acid.

After all that work it came out pretty decent. I do have a back up tank on the way just in case I run into any issues with this one.

Here it is with a couple coats of white appliance Enamel.

Also in that picture is the new head light. The old one rotted out so I replaced it with an 8 dollar one from Harbor Freight. I plan on doing an led or hid conversion to it.

Broken brake lever fix. I don't plan on running the stock position mirrors so I welded it up and ground it to its final shape.

So I was working on the bike and having a couple Old Fashions and I had the dumb idea to do a partial frame swap. I made a template of the upper and lower mounts, made a center mark and then punched that center mark on the new and old frames. I took some measurements from each frame in relation to that punch mark and key parts on the frames everything lined up so the. I drilled 1/4" holes on the punch marks on each frame and proceed to separate each rear portion from their frame.

Once they were fully separated I cleaned up the mounts of the donor frame of cut marks and weld and bold it the the main frame. I assembled as much of the bike as I had and made sure all my measurements came out before any welding.

With everything coming out I welded her up.

I'm missing the photo of the bare frame after welding it up...

Next I shaped the cradle area to fit the 125cc motor.

The foreman came into the shop to check on my work.

I had to relocate the spring perch for the rear brake. Ground the weld of from the back and punched it out.

Nifty little plug weld tool from Eastwood.

Drilled and welded into it's new position.

Drilled the rear motor mounts to 10mm and then did a reinforcement weld on each one.

First coat of paint and where I tend to fail hard as I hate painting so hard.

Second coat after a bit of wet sanding.

Got a cheap seat off of eBay. My best friends uncle has been doing upholstery for close to 40 years so I'm gonna sweet talk him into recovering it for me after ive made modifications to it.

Painting some of the small parts.

I have to reshoot the the head light as I got a nasty run it but there is a chance I'm getting a used oven in a month so I may look into powder coating it some of the parts.

The wife got a little worried when I asked if I could use some of her nail polish.

So this is about where I'm at. I machined a couple bushings to mount the rear indicators but I haven't snapped any photos yet.

Next up
Wiring
Fork restoration
Tapered roller bearing conversion
Wheel bearings and seals
And more painting....

Thanks guys. I'm waiting on a bunch of little parts to start hitting my mail box. I'm working on fixing some damage on the wiring harness.

Looks like a cool project. Can't wait to see it together.

I may pull my little CB100 back down and do some clean-up on it.

That's a good looking bike you got there. I can't wait to see mine that far along as well.

I've got a bunch of parts being delivered daily that I'm hoping to start working on this weekend. I'm still technically in school to finish my advance metal Fab program and putting in 10 hrs a day in the shop so I've been busy.

Hi guys, its been a bit, i've been pretty busy with work. Ive made some progress on Fronda. Im now at the hardest part in my eyes, the electrical.

Here is where I was hoping you guys could drop some serious knowledge and input that would help me get this done. The motor that Ive found is a 1978 CB125 I believe, a 6v points configuration. What Id like, no, what I need to do is a 12v conversion as all of the lighting is 12v led lighting. Where do I start, what really do I need? Ive read on some sites I just need a 12v battery and rectifier, others say I need to rewind the stator as well. What I really want to do if possible is a 12v coil, a transistor ignition conversion that hopefully will work with 6v points, 12v lights and batteries.

If you folks could point me in the right direction that would be awesome.
