Cyclists UNITE! Any Roadies, Mtn Bikers, Etc. Hanging About?

I know you guys love all things mechanical, so I figured a thread about cycling would be cool. Really interested in seeing what people are riding on this forum as far as bicycles are concerned. I myself ride both road and mountain. Fairly serious, though not a competitive racer quite yet.

Here's a picture of me from a race I did in Virginia last year, on my current road bike which is a 2005 Specialized Tarmac Comp. Carbon frame with full Ultegra groupset. Looking to upgrade sometime this year to *possibly* a custom steel ride, if I can gather enough cash that is.

time for new wheels, but other than that she's a beast!
won't rattle off all the parts but it's a Volume Cutter v3 frame
w/ bmx, track, and road components.

sweet bikes guys!
been a while since ive ridden, but i used to bmx alot years ago, and then mountain bike, i was last riding a we the people kh01 frame with mosh, haro, hofman, etc parts, but that was stolen from storage. total drag.
and i have a downhill'ish set up mountain bike hanging in the garage.
really want something like what you guys are riding though. very cool.

Awesome Bikes, guys! I love seeing what the other dudes out there are riding.

T-Stanley-Love that Felt! I often toy around with the idea of selling my Gary Fisher Paragon for a Felt 29er SS.

Emcarthu-That Volume Cutter is siiiiiick. Is that a carbon fork you have on it? Either way, you don't see a lot of those around.

Keep on posting, guys. Not just pictures of your wheels, but anything cycling related. Upcoming races/rides, stories, anything!!

Ill post pics in a bit once its done, but Im building a bike for my wife. Nothing like the stuff you guys are riding here. Its a mid 50s Schwinn (I think, the neck badge is missing, bit it matches pics Ive found from that era). Definitly very old. I found it at a goodwill for $10.

Nothing crazy. Just a repaint, new to me 1950s Messinger leather two tone seat. Beach bars. Big ol' whitewall balloon tires. Etc...

Oh yeah, and as requested, a basket. Haha...

Thanks!! I was considering the Paragon before I purchased the Felt. Mine eventually weighted a little over 22lbs. Just change your rear cog and go tubeless ;)

bicycles? meh i dabble with them I suppose...

no pics, but I have a 2004 Langster pro track bike, my bmx bike, my beater road bike, two or three frames lying around...

Oh, and I work in a very popular bike shop here in brooklyn ;). Head mechanic for two years, behind only one other mechanic (lyn murray, cat 1 racer and national champion of antigua for a few years ;))

my racing days are over though... scoliosis makes the back hurt too much. bummer too, as I'm so young.

Very cool! I'm really wanting to build up a steel road bike to use as my primary one. Any recommendations as far as frame and components? I want to keep the entire build under $2000. I was thinking maybe something simple, like a Surly Pacer or Soma frame, with either 105 or Sram Rival components. Also, I know it's not the most conventional, but I really want to put Velocity Deep V's on it. Heavy, yes, but I can diet down enough in the off-season to make up for the extra weight those wheels will bring me, besides, they're indestructible, right?

Deep-v's are hipster as hell. Why spend all that money and throw on deep-v's? throw on a good set of wheels like mid range xero's for the cash.

Either frame is a good choice; make it come down to personal preference in terms of style. Personally I'd prefer SRAM Rival over the 105; quality is a tad better in my opinion, and the SRAM double tap shifters are just TOO nice (IMHO, some people, like lyn murray, like the larger sweep available with the shimano system). Don't waste money on a stupid expensive seatpost; no one cares if you have a thomson and itll hold the seat as well as any other. Good tires are key; for a daily ridden bike I'd go with Maxxis Refuse and wouldn't look back. I've personally seen them hold up to having 6 nails put through them without the tire blowing, and the ride quality is still great.

as for cranks, get a nice FSA crankset and you'll be set; again, do what you see within your budget. just always keep in mind that rotational weight is the worst kind there is.

I can justify spending 200 dollars on a nice selle san marco saddle, or if you prefer the feel of a leather saddle, a brooks. youll regret cheaping out here way down the road halfway through a century. I'm partial to fiziik bar tape as well as lizard skin. depends on what i'll be using the bike for; race bike i'll usually have gloves on, so i prefer fiziik.

ask me whatever you need to know... For now i'm going to bed. xD

I was riding 12-15K miles a year until this year. Race road, Cyclocross (singlespeed) and occasionally get up to the velodrome. Just another cat 3 family man.

I've got:

1980 Razesa (high end Spanish steel), which is a nice bike but has lots of front brake shudder.

1998 Santa Cruz Chameleon with Cook Brothers cranks and other high end 90's goodies.

2009 KHS 4130 29er 1x9 (my main ride) spent less than $100 after trades.

1980's Bianchi for the girl

1991 Marin Team that needs a negative rise, 1 1/8th quill stem...aka nearly impossible.

Oh and I still rock Thumb Shifters or Friction shifters on all of my bikes. I hate rapid-fire trigger shift junk. They always fall apart.

i have a few bikes here in Miami. No gears because it is flat. I think the ratio on my road bike is 48-16. It's pretty good for cruising around 19-20mph for a while. I did a Metric century on it a year ago in a bit under 4 hours. Nothing too crazy, but it was a fixed gear bike at the time, so I was happy with that performance. I since just added a basket and used it for commuting, then bought a 29er for the trails. I rarely get to go, but the 29er is full rigid, so it's a blast no matter the difficulty of the trails. Then I have a cruiser for when my family and I take lazy rides.

its not THAT bad... Back when I used to train/ride seriously I would average 18mph on my 48/15 geared langster in prospect park loop (park here in brooklyn, NY) which has a decent hill, decent decent, and decent straight portion. 3 miles around the loop, and I would ride it 10 times a day during the week and do a metric century once a week if i found the time. my average speed would drop to about 15-16mph when I did the metric though.

even though its only been 9 months, I doubt I could even do 5 laps holding a 16mph average. soon as you get out of it, it is three times as hard. Honestly I don't even want to get on the bike again... I cringe at just the thought of not being able to lie down to go to sleep (back issues)

Wow man, those are some truly impressive stats. I'm familiar with Prospect Park, so that's no joke.

If you have any parts your looking to sell to help me with my new build, let me know! I'm probably going to go with either a Soma, or possibly even a Cross Check frame. I like the idea of the versatility I would get from it. Something bomb-proof to use for training, and throw on some cross tires to use for the winter months here in Pittsburgh.

wish i had something to throw your way... unfortunately dont have any roady parts lying around, otherwise id love to help. If your buying parts new though, I could probably get my boss to hook you up with a good discount by ordering a whole drivetrain set (such as if you got all the shifters, derailleurs etc in one go) and then sending it directly to you. no guarantees, but we might be able to work something out. PM me with what your looking for.
