I know a guy who has an awesome old salvage yard that he closed about 8 years ago. I got in contact and asked him if he would let me and some buddies look for some parts on it. He obliged and setup a time to meet up and he let me have run of the mill. I spent 6 hours out there looking around, snapping pictures and getting some choice parts. It was really cool to be looking around this bike time capsule alone. After digging and finding some bikes I wanted to buy the man came out and began talking with me. I asked him what he was doing with the place and he said selling the land and sadly scrapping the bikes. I informed him I had found some bikes I wanted and could he set them aside for me to purchase. He obliged again and in the next few weeks I will be going back for more parts and bikes. Its very sad that for the most parts all these bikes will be scrapped. He has tons of Honda 360's and great old Yamaha stuff and Suzuki. When I left I told him I would call him to setup another walk around and purchase next week. When I left he was cutting up a KZ750 for scrap. I wish he could have stayed open and didn't have to scrap the bikes. Take a look at the pics. Enjoy. I love my new tank and Headlight/Speedo. Got both for $30 bucks-NICE.
Id say 90% of it is unsalvageable rubbish. It's all been picked over. Some guy poaches a tappet cover and the rest of the motor is destroyed after the next rainfall. Best items are the aluminum rims from all the motocrossers.
By any sweet chance, is there a way you could keep an eye out for a throttle tube for a 1981 KZ650? I need one. I live in MN, so not sure if this could even work, but it's worth the try. Thanks.
Wish I hadn't seen this. My lack of yards in the area makes me long for a place like that. Now all we get is the swap meets and eBay. Just think, for every bike scrapped, that's another that will never get put on dtt or appreciated by anyone. Probably become a disposable toaster since most cars are plastic now. Sad.
