Road Trip to Barber Museum.....

Vince Lupo

Ridden Not Trailered!
I'm considering riding my '66 SuperHawk down to the Barber Museum from here in Baltimore (I'm giving Mid-
Ohio a rest this year). Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to go in October when they have the vintage festival. For you guys who are more familiar with the museum, is there any other time that would be good to go, events-wise? I'd probably be devoting about 8 days total for the trip (two days down, two days back, a few days there, one day as an extra), but if I could allot an extra day or two for the trip, I would. It's probably the better part of 900 miles each way, so maybe I better make it 10 days, eh?

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Whatever you do make sure you stop in the Deals Gap area for some riding. Not just the dragon but the cherohala skyway, blip down to telico plains, etc.

Riding through the great smokey mtn park itself was a let down - very slow behind lots of cars but the surrounding areas are magic.

The museum is nice - big wow factor, but 1 day there is plenty if nothing else is going on.

Not sure of upcoming events, but Tim pretty much summed it up... anytime is a good time!
I'd been to the museum a couple of times before I went for Vintage Fest. You can spend several hours walking around in there and still not see everything. The roads around Birmingham are very nice as well.
Also as Tim stated... the Dragon is nice, just to say "I did it", but it's usually crowded with tourists or cages or cops, or all three. The "other" roads are much more fun... The Cherahola Skyway, Hwy 28 through Fontana, etc. Mad Maps has several great routes planned out through that area (NC, TN, and GA) that include Points of Interest and Dining spots as well.

IMO, The best time to hit any of the attractions (Barber, Dragon, et al) is during the week. There's much less other people around to spoil your fun ;)

You could try to make it to the Indy or AMA races. If you wanna see music there is the Crawfish Boil. I can't really think of anything else off the top of my head. When you come down, be sure to hit up hwy 25. It's real close to Barber.

There is a Bass Pro shop right next to the track!! Just kidding. There is a whole bunch of good rides around that area but 25 is probably my favorite, and not just cause I grew up around there. Plus there's a cult you can visit in the area (they see The Virgin Mary next to a tree). But seriously in August we have a decent film fest called Sidewalk, and there is the Indy GrandPrix and Porsche 250 in April at Barber.
