Upholstery adhesive

Hi guys,
A while back, somebody posted about using some sort of upholstery adhesive to glue their seat cover to the underside of a seat pan. I think it was some really heavy-duty stuff.

My father-in-law (who is an upholsterer) is going to re-do my seat and I want to suggest that he uses this stuff.

For the life of me, I can't find the thread. Does anybody remember this?

Thanks,

I use the stuff called "Goop".
Its a rubber adhesive that is usually used to stuck weather stripping to metal

And it will hold real or synthetic leather to the bottom of the seat pan?

Thanks,

Im not sure... Ive never pasted leather/vynil to metal before, but why not sew velcro the the leather and self adhesive velcor to the metal pan? Thats what I do and it works great!!

It was me. I used Bard's Contact Cement--$7 from the local hardware store. That Goop might be just as good. I just don't have any experience with it.

the seat I have appears to have had the upholstery hot glued to the fiberglass. I was gonna try that with the fiberglass seat I made....anybody have any experience with this? Does it work?

hot glue or a hot glue gun will work, for a while, and as they say, it comes unglued ;D I found a contact cement called pliobond, which I used to glue high density (20mm) foam to a painted surface with excellent results.I purchased mine at a home hardware,,good luck

3M makes a brilliant spray on contact cement that is the dog's bollocks!
3M #77 works a treat and #90 (IIRC) is a touch stronger. Just spray is where you intend things to stick, on both pieces) let'm sit long enough to suck down half a Guinness (or a Harp if you're so inclined) and stick'm together. Easy as pie!

I'm pretty sure the 3M 77 is the specified adhesive for Travelcade covers, but for adhering the vinyl to the foam, not the edges of the cover to the seatpan. Not sure it would have the strength for that.

If you're stretching the vinyl tight, I can't imagine any substitute for a mechanical fastener of some form. The vinyl on my manx style seat is glued to the fibreglass pan (commercial job) but there isn't a lot of tension on the cover.

I've used it in several dirtbike seats before and it worked ok.

From 3M:
3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive forms a fast, aggressive tack for bonding a vast variety of lightweight materials. It makes bonds instantly, is fast-drying and has low soak-in factor which makes it ideal for applications, simple or complex – all around your home or work-place. It forms strong bond with various materials like carpets, lightweight foams, paper, cardboard, fabric, cushion, plastic, metal, wood, fiberglass, foil, felt, cloth and painted or unpainted metals. 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive provides high coverage, has low soak-in for long lasting bond and securely bonds many substances. Has low VOCs. Does not contain ozone-depleting CFCs. Not for sale in California.

I'm preparing to glue both the foam and vinyl to my 'glass bumstop seat with it....like I said, it's pretty good stuff. Really similar (maybe the same) to what was used to glue those snazzy vinyl tops to 70's Ford Torinos....and we all know how much abuse one of those will take. I never missed a Starsky&Hutch episode........ ::)

Yeah, I'm thinking of blind-riveting it like the stock seat was.....the hot glue thing didn't work at all, and I want it tight. I'm actually using a old spare tire cover from when my jeep had small tires....i's working out really well because it already has a seam sewn into it and looks almost exactly like the manx seat without the red piping....I'll put some pics once I get it squared away.
