Winter Storage NYC

Hi all,

I just moved to Brooklyn a few weeks ago and am looking for a place to store my '80 GS550 for the winter. Anyone in the NYC area know of any good shops that offer storage/garage access?

Thanks!

Depends where in Brooklyn.

Wiliamsburg has Moto Girl and Brooklyn Moto.

I have seen some ads about winter storage somewhere in downtown Brooklyn. Check craigslist.

have you thought about renting a storage room and storing the motorcycle there?

I live in Fort Greene, so I don't mind taking it to Williamsburg or other nearby areas. Have you heard anything about Vax Moto or Machina Cycles? I saw ads on craigslist from them. All are around $175/month which is a bit steep IMO.

I have thought about renting a storage room since it'll be cheaper than a shop - is that what you do? I guess my concern is that they aren't temperature controlled like most shops/garages, and I like the idea of having access to the workshop if I want to do some work during the winter.

Yeah i still haven't decided what to do.

Prices are pretty steep, while access to a workbench would be nice, i don't think I could justify the prices.

I think there are temperature controled storage rooms, but I haven't checked the prices on them.

The way i figure is that January and Febuary are the worst months here in the city. It would still be cheaper to store them in a temperature controled storage room from Jan until mid March the most.

True. I just sent an inquiry to American Self Storage on Clinton Ave so I'll see what their pricing is. They have temp controlled units and 24/7 access, so I can't justify spending almost $200/month just to have my bike at a cool shop w/ other bikes. It would be nice to meet other riders/talk bikes/get build tips, but not necessary.

Hey man,
175 is unfortunately the standard for storage in BK. If you are gonna have to pay that I suggest Machina and Works Engineering, as they are the nicest, most honest of the bunch and are deserving of new business. Whats this place on Clinton? Can you work on bikes there (I lucked out on a 150 share garage downtown BK but it's a true rarity). My garage is COLD

Thanks for the info man, much appreciated. The place I found is a general storage place, so it wouldn't be a garage to do work, just a cheaper place to store it for the winter. The ad you sent looks like it might be a good option, I'll reach out to the guy. Thanks again!

I gotta ask this. I am new to motorcycles so would there be there much differance in heated vs cold storage.

I would think that for as long as the motorcycle is protected by four walls from the outside elements and all the neccessary prep work, fuel stabilizer, oil change, waxing, carb cleaning and good cover... everything would be fine.

I have three options. Building like shed with foam heating in my backyard and storing the motorcycle there. Or I find a self storage room or I shell out the big busck and go to Moto Girl to store it.

So is there much differance in cold vs heated storage?

All of the bike storage places are already mentioned...

I'd upvote works and downvote motogrrl... works is truly an amazing place... motogrrl... well, just seemed like a completely crowded shop to me.

also, nice to see another NYC rider! and brooklyn none the less.

I'm in parkslope.
