1972 CB 750 Fork Tubes & Lowering Question

Tore into the front fork assembly on my '72 CB750 to fix a leaking seal and discovered that the fork tube on the offending side is damaged (chrome is gone and the rough surface is tearing up the seal).

Does anyone know were I can get a new fork tube or can these possibly be re-chromed?

I would also like to lower the bike by an inch or two. Cycle - X sells sorty shocks, can I lower the front end by pushing the fork tubes up througjh the triple trees by a corresponding amount? I would like to run a straight drag bar as opposed to clubmans.

I think if you google "forks by frank", he should be able to help you out. Kinda pricey from what I hear, but it's an option. Might wanna try the local salvage yard as well, usually the uppers rust out around the fork mounts, not so much near the seals.

I'm sure if you really wanna upgrade, a newer front end swap is a possibility too.

If the forks clear your bars you can slide them up in the clamps, otherwise you can shorten them internally by putting a spacer under the damper rod. There's a few threads on fork lowering over here - do a search

if you do the spacer under the damper you also have to cut or mod the shock/spacer at the top for the right recoil

I did some reseach and found fork tubes form "Fast From The Past." When I check the VIN# on my bike it indicates that this bike uses the 580mm fork tubes rather than the 583mm; from what I can find out Honda made changes with in the model years (mines a '72). Why would they use 3mm shorter fork tubes within the same model year?

Also, Fast From The Past sells some nice Tarozzi Clip Ons for 35mm forks, does anyone have experience with these? I was thinking about the low rise set which raise the bars 40mm,mounted above the triple tree. Would that make sense if I lower the bike by and inch and a half or so by running the fork tubes up through the top triple tree?

They also sell a standard set and a hi-rise set . I was originally thinking about drag bars but after some research it seems clip ons are better for comfort. I don't want an extremely hunched over riding position so I'm staying away from the clubmans.

CB550F tubes and damper rods will lower front end about inch and half, cut stock 750 springs to fit
(I did the opposite and fitted CB750 fork tubes and springs into my 550 plus CB750 shocks to get some decent ground clearance)

That's what i did. It's low and firm....
