1973 Cb350 left cylinder sputtering/backfire

Greetings all, I am relatively new to the forum but I wanted to post a question I have about my cb350 (build photos and all still to come).

So here is the deal, I have had my bike road worthy for a little while and what started out great has slowly turned into hell. My present problem is this... my left cylinder seems to be quite out of wack. Its really easy to start the bike, often 1 kick and it cranks up and both cylinders sound fine. However this good sound and good throttle response only lasts for maybe 20 seconds, soon the left cylinder starts kinda sputtering and miss firing. However if you give it a little gass it sounds alright, the right cylinder is thumping strongly. On the road however everything seems fine, no backfire no odd sounds pulls through the full rev range.

Once you come to a stop however the engine will just die, and if you blip the throttle on the way down and keep it say 25% open then you can keep the engine alive, however the left cylinder will backfire a little bit. Once the engine dies if you wait like 20 sec it will start right back up, however if you dont wait you have to constantly twist the throttle and hit the starter for it to pick back up.

some background on the bike:

1.)I did an engine rebuild and set everything to spec a few months ago. It would idle but you would have to blip the throttle on the way down
2.)After a little bit of riding I found that it was running a too rich (#110 jets)- thinking that my constantly fowling plugs were the reason it wouldnt idle correctly i changed the jets
3.)I dropped the jets to #105 and replaced the plugs... fixed problem of backfire cause from fowling plugs
4.)However it still would not idle correctly, though i do admit that it would idle and not die off or back fire as often, so thinking that since you kinda had to wait a few sec before starting it again i figured that fuel flow/pressure was a problem. The flow through the old petcock seemed poor to i replaced it, and for good measure put in new Iridium Plugs
5.)After this point is when the backfire in the left cylinder started up and the even worse off idle performance.

Things that I have recently checked:
1.) Point gaps are correct
2.) floats are gaped to spec and both bowls fill correctly
3.) the left side diaphram is in good condition
4.) battery is currently charging (though i charge every couple of weeks so this shouldnt be the problem... maybe a bad rectifier?)

Ok well i figured it out. I bit the bullet and spent the afternoon going over all of the gaps. I found that the left cylinder had gotten too tight making the exhaust valve open early or stay open. My point gaps were also too close. I also reset the cam chain tension and gave it some fresh oil. In short its performing incredibly well.

I realize that this is quite an old post, but figure it's worth a try.

How exactly did you go about checking this out?? I'm having a similar issue and am new to older bikes like this.

Thanks
