1978 DT400 Need help with ideas!

Hey guys,

I'm a 21 year old from Australia here and have a idea for a new project.

In a couple of days I leave for a 4-5 month trip (depending on how long the money lasts) to europe but few days ago was at my friends house and found out his dad is looking at selling this 1978 DT400. I've been looking for a bike to fix up for when i get back from my trip (sold my RVF400 a few weeks ago). It's not the best cosmetically but mechanically wise in good condition (was rebuilt a long time ago but not ridden much since). It runs, it stops and it is currently registered so it seems like a good starting point.

My idea is to turn the DT400 from a enduro bike into a street bike. As much as a enduro bike appeals to me I won't use it enough. I'm really after some help or ideas on the work needed to turn a DT400 into a fun street machine.

I was orignal thinking of going cafe racer style but I am lend to believe the geometry of the bike wont match that style and better off going something more like a vintage supermoto?

For the cafe style had a idea of raising the forks 40mm or so and mount clip-ons on top of the triple tree? Maybe get a smaller (18/19") front wheel and relaced with the old hub. Or should I be looking at swapping forks to something else if you guys thing cafe is a no go what about ideas for the vintage supermoto??

I'm really not sure but I'm open for ideas. Anything at all from like what style to go cafe, tracker, super moto, etc or places to look at for ideas or just even your opinons.

*I know it will vibrate the shit out of me, be expensive compared to starting with something else, etc, etc but i'm up for a challenge and really like the idea of a DT400 road bike. Just imagine a faint 2 stroke smoke trail going through the city and all legal ;)

I have a 1975 DT250 im turning in to a cafe bobber. i couldn't decide what to do, so im doing a combo of the both. Im sure Catbird is going to look at this one hahahah

With all the new DT's popping up lately would love to see if anyone else has anything to add to this??

I'm in the early stages of a DT400 build also. I don't have a particular 'style' in mind - as the build progresses I expect the process itself will dictate which way the bike goes.

I'd go the Retard route RETro-motARD that is, just to be different. It will never be and RVF400 so I'd stay away from anything even vaguely reminiscent of a sport bike.
