1980 cm400t running rough with no power

1980 CM400T is running very rough. Its spitting gas out the intake. I have cleaned the carbs and jets a few times. messed with the gas/air ratio. Its idle fine a few times and when i take off it dies ten feet away and starts idling rough again.

Unless you/someone messed with the factory timing setting, that shouldn't be an issue. If it idles fine one minute, and not the next, the timing should be fine. Timing doesn't "come and go" like that.
Since you say it's spitting gas out the intake, I'd start with the carbs... making sure the floats are adjusted properly and there's no trash on the float needles/seats.

It will be worth checking engine compression and for the presence of spark, too.
