'84 XJ650 Seca
Hey all... Just picked up this bike as a little winter project. Will be updating as build progresses, hopefully at a steady clip

'84 according to he guy I bought it from. Gonna try and get as much riding in as I can for now. Then strip it down and rebuild during the long Montana winter. Motor seems solid, though carbs could use some tuning since it came from Portland i.e. sea level and is now at 5000 ft. But my first upgrades are probably going to be cone filters and exhaust so I think I'll hold off till then

Looks like a pre YICS motor - which is 80-81.

If you haven't already, have a GOOD look over at XJbikes. These bikes DO NOT like running without the airbox and there is a wealth of insight and advice over there (especially carb cleaning / maintenance).

Pipes and air filters will really hurt rideability. I'd fit new tires and give it a service and maybe fit rea set pegs and slightly cut down seat and that's about all it needs. Just ride the wheels off it and wear it out.

Been lurking pretty hard on XJbikes... good to know about the filters, I guess i'll be sticking with the stock airbox. Really the first things i'm going to do is carb clean, new brake lines (and pads probably, they are squeeking pretty bad), and just make sure it is running solid. The last project I had never got to the point of running cuz I had to move and sell it, so I'm just enjoying having a functioning bike right now. It has pretty much new tires on it which is nice.

Good on ya ;)

I've had quite a few XJ's over the years and they really are the epitome of the UJM (Universal Japanes Motorcycle) in my opinion. They pretty much do everything quite well without a lot of fuss......and they just keep going ;D

...yea, if you and the carbs can live in harmony, lol. I'm so damn sick of these hitachi's. Most sensitive carbs ive ever dealt with. Nice bike mate. Feel free to drop off the beer pong table if you're ever in indy :p

Any progress on this thing? I'm in Bozeman as well. We ought to go for a ride if the weather holds...

Minor update on project...

Didn't get to work on it as much as I would have liked this winter due to finances plus busy school schedule. The bike was actually torn apart the day I took this photo, pieced it together for a quick spin before I had to leave home for the summer. Unfortunately living in an apartment in Chicago with no garage is not conducive to owning a motorcycle that is in a questionable state of tune (runs, carbs desperately need clean and sync, in the process of fabing a custom 4-1 airbox so open carbs, etc). Though I would post a pic anyways...

Hey mantana!

I am in Bozeman as well, and I'm picking up the same bike that you have in about a week! Just wondering if you still have your seca, and if you have done any more upgrades to it?

Nice bike, I can't tell by the thread if you figured it out but you have a 1982 yamaha xj650rj seca. This is a non-yics engine and 1982 is the only year yamaha sold the 650seca in the us.

Good luck and keep up the good work. If you have the original mufflers please let me know because I am restoring one to original condition and could use the stock exhaust.

Cheers,

Pepe
