1994 fzr 600 should i buy?

Hey guys. I'm going to look at a 1994 yamaha fzr600 tomorrow. Its an hour drive from me so I want to be pretty sure about it. It has 20,000 miles on it and the seller has told me that everything is working perfectly. It also has some pretty new tires on it. The only reservation I have is the transmission. These bikes are known to develop a problem with popping out of 2nd gear under high rpms. I need to buy a bike I can rely on so I'm not sure about buying this one.
How common is this problem?
In your opinion should I go ahead and buy the bike?
If I keep a tight maintenance schedule and don't do any powershifting nonsense will this bike last a long time without transmission troubles?

No and the motor has to come CLEAR apart to fix the trans there is 2 bolts that you have to take the head and jugs off to get to to split the cases
 
It also looks as if its been stored outside under a tarp. That bike is going to a mess under the plastic if so.

$1400 is a steal for the FZR if it doesn't need torn apart and a winters worth of work done to it. Add a grand (or likely more) to that price if you need to rebuild the bike though.

The guy said he'd take $1100 for it. Still not worth it?
 
I can't offer any advice on the trany, but can tell you I ueed to rail on one in the NC mountains! In the twisters it was perfect! Light quick, and a blast! And would eat squids on liter bikes, ah hwy181 I do miss it!

Though as with any older bike there are sure to be issues, take it for a spin run it like you would if you owned it and see if anything crops up. Just don't wad it as then it's yours...
 
Its an awesome bike man. I wish I could find/afford one locally. I'm just saying that its highly unlikely that you won't have to put money and time into it. Its not a buy and ride off into the sunset deal like the seller is attempting to make it seem. If you're willing to spend the time and cash to fix it all up and get it kicking ass again than by all means... DO IT!

$1100 motorcycles are VERY VERY rarely $1100 motorcycles, if ya know what I mean...

My dad told me "every car costs at leaston $3k". Bikes follow similar rules. :)
 
A Carb diaphragm are 185 each if you can find them and there is 4 of them. you will need at least 2 if the bikes been sitting you will need 4
 
Looks alright to me mate, ask politely if you can take her for a spin. Do that, then pull up somewhere and go over with a fine tooth comb to see if you can find anything thats obviously wrong. Give it another good ride on the way back and you'll know if you want it - thats how I've rolled anyway and its worked alright.

Basic bike buying budget:

$100 for filters, oil & hydraulic fliud. Get a K&N filter and use good oil.
$100 for any minor indescrepancies like dying tyre valves, busted lights, torn seatcovers, cracked windshield etc.
$250 for something major you didn't expect. A good example is wheel bearings; I've almost flipped on the freeway!

Throw in some time and effort and you should be covered. I'd say $1100 is a steal if its rideable and in any way complete without needing major work.
