1st time builder brat / bobber budget build

I used to use Pirelli MT43s on my classic trials/enduro CZ and as I could only afford one bike to do everything I rode it to work as well. They were great but some of the cheaper alternatives were a bit slippy on wet roads.
 
Just a small update from tonight's sneaky 30 minutes, just started to get the seat pan sorted. Hoping that this isn't a throw away and I can get it too work!

Here's a little question........how tight does the pan have to sit on the frame.

The gaps are allot smaller now after a little more bending, but what sort of tolerance will I have for the material. I understand that that question will obviously depend on the fabric but I'm after a guide. My frame profile is creating a few problems for what are limited metal shaping/bending abilities!

The first one was just the roughing out stage, I had a little more time on it. How close to the profile are we talking. I know this isn't finished at the minute!!!
 
I normally allow 1/4" gap [ equal all round ] so that when the upholstery and cover is fitted it's a neat close fit to the frame rail.
 
Does that then suggest that the foam would be wrapped around?

I'm thinking to get the best profile I may cut and weld it in two sections as opposed to trying to put the curved in.
 
A little more "thwacking" as we say round here with my favourite hammer "the persuader" and I think it's getting there. Get the bolts welded I place and it's starting to get there I think.

I know I'm posting baby steps, but I try to do a little every night, and I also know guys like looking at photos.

If you see anything fundamentally wrong please let me know!
 
you need to check clearance at full bottom, it looks like you have quite a bit less than stock(tire to seat pan)
take off one shock ratchet strap the shock side all the way down against the bottom out bumper,make sure you have a little clearance from there
 
I'll take your advise and check that, when I had it rolling and sat on it (with my reasonable weight) it didn't seem an issue.

Apart from altering the frame loop I haven't altered the geometry of the frame, so I haven't considered any issues. I'm thinking it may be perspective in the photo or at least I'm hoping so.

sitting on it wont bottom it out
it is the added cross piece and seat pan
best check it now,before you button everything up, you need clearance from full bottom

As to wrapping the upholstery around .............................. that's purely personal pref.

On my 7R style CR seat I did take the cover around and glued underneath to finish . On the KZ750 Tracker [ XR750 seat ] I'll simply upholster a seat pad and then attach that to the seat so it looks [ and is ] a totally seperate piece.

IF you are doing the whole job yourself [ maybe first time?] it's much simpler to take the cover over the upholstery [ foam ] and finish / glue it underneath.

You can get the profile how you want by adding / shaping the foam before covering.
 
Spent most of the night weighing up whether I'm going to try and trim the seat myself so not got allot done in the garage!!
Few bits and pieces done tonight, welded the bolts into the seat pan, is a rough looking job but will be effective (sorry no pics - looks to much like bird crap too post). Did a little bit of polishing of parts and wrapped the exhaust

Cheers for the input beach, I'm really tempted to do it myself. My heart says do it and then everything on the bike will be by me but my head says it's one if the first few things people notice if it looks shit, the bike becomes shit. I may be hunting down an upholsterer, I know exactly what I want to achieve so I'm half way there!!
 
I'd have to agree with going the professional approach.

My current seats will be done that way as I want some stitching pleated in - can't do that at home. :'(

Here's a tip - look for a local domestic upholsterer. They will charge you normal rates as opposed to "OMG it's very difficult to do a motorcycle seat = very expensive" from a specialist. You might be lucky and find one that's not related to Dick Turpin .........................
 
My short lived flirtation with dual sport tyres came to an end today when I had the rear fitted, I'm pleased with it. Got the battery box sat in for a little look see at what I got. I checked at full bottom and it's tight but didn't touch any part of the frame.

So only a small update, I've been busy beavering away with the bits and pieces, but no big impact items. I've changed my mind on the black battery box and started to take the paint off, that's been an hell of a job. I also started to clean up the foot rests but they seemed a little past it, so I decided to make my own tonight. My "fabrication" skills are at very best limited, I've roughed one side up, hoping with a bit of tidying they should do the job!
