2012 Bonnie Wiring Help

I relocated the rectifier on my 2012 Bonneville. Now whenever I use the left turn signal it doesn't work and my headlight flashes. If I do anything that is controlled by the #7 fuse, it blows the fuse. I am at a total loss of what to do. I have tried to replug the rectifier wires. I can't trace to any exposed wires.

At a loss.

Sounds like you screwed up something pretty good. The rectifier goes nowhere near fuse #7 or any of the circuits you mentioned.

There should only be five wires on the rectifier. Three of them are from the alternator, one goes to the battery + and the other is grounded.

The full story:

Replaced the front headlight ears. Had to relocate the rectifier to the frame from the forks. I had to pull some of the wire that is housed in the headlight bucket out. Fuse 7 is the turn signals, brake lights, horn. Is it possible I exposed a wire in the bucket? The horn is now attached to the rectifier, is it also possible that the metal on metal connection between those two could be shorting it out.

It's demoralizing to think I messed up bad. Would I have to trace the wires from the fuse out to find out which one is off?

Did you put the ground washers back between the nut and ear on the turn signals? I know this sounds odd, but I recently swapped out some signals and it was pointed out this was very important....

I'll have to check, that sounds similar to an issue I had with the brake light grounding wire blowing that 7 fuse because it wasn't screwed in properly. I will look and see. If not is it something just any old washer could fix?

Are you sure you hooked up all the wires correctly? Fuse #7 is the one that controls the turn signals, but you've said that your turn signal switch flashes the headlights; and both those things cannot be true.

maybe the headlight flashes because of a voltage drop because a wire is shorting somewhere behind the flasher relay?

The washer didn't look like anything exceptional, just a plain steel washer, also check your turn signal wires, I'm taking for granted you swapped blinkers along with the ears. In my case the black wire with the white tracer, connected with the solid black coming from the bike. Mine are working properly, so give it a check....

So here is my update.

Finally got somewhat of a break from the latest Polar Vortex, so I went to the shed and with all of your suggestions in mind, I took all of the wiring out of the headlight bucket, and completely removed the bucket. I disconnected all of the connections and examined all of the wires. I couldn't any directly exposed wires, but I went ahead and took out the old turn signals and their tiny little wires. When I had the aftermarket headlights in, I was in Afghanistan, so the dealer did the work. Looks like they just crimped the connections together and e-taped it. It was shorty. I replaced the turn signals with these beautiful things I bought at British Customs.( http://www.british-customs.com/triumph-motorcycle-black-bullet-turn-signals.html ) Replaced all the wires back into the bucket. It's a little shallow because it is aftermarket 7inch from Dime City Cycles, but everything fit. I want to go back in and shorten the front turn signal wires, and seal the rear hole with a rubber grommet or something to eliminate wires rubbing on the metal.

After that everything worked!!! It was a real relief that it was really pretty easy. My next project is to replace the rear turn signals with the bullet signals, and I want to take my club mans off and put on some tracker handle bars for some more long distance riding.

It was a lot of fun to get into the electrical aspect and to replace the turn signals which I haven't had the opportunity to do. I always dread going into that headlight bucket because there are so many wires inside of it, but having moved one connection out, it isn't as bad.

Thank you all for your help and advice, and I'll see you all on the road.

Bello Corse http://www.bellacorse.com has some nice Lucas knockoffs for rear lights. Beats the hell out of that Jetson's looking p.o.s. they come with.... And makes it easier getting to the seat bolts.
