Crap Tire has (had?) a big sale on bench grinders. $30 is a steal of a deal. Nothing fancy or anything, but could easily be used for a polisher as well. Comes with worklight and two different stones. I picked one up to do some more polishing, the drill press is just too slow!!!

I picked up an 8 inch grinder from Princess Auto a while back. You can easily remove the guards and grinding wheels and replace them with buffing pads. Runs about 3700 RPM which is plenty fast for polishing.
I also have a sanding mop that I use in a drill press or on a handheld drill, which is what I'd recommend for the wire wheel. You need at least 2 pads for polishing.

3700 is actually pretty slow. I normall spin between 5K to 10K or I'll be there all afternooon. My first grinder spin at 2000 and it was a noticeable change to go up to 10K.

i got my buffing wheel and compound from princess auto locally, you can get the whole kit at a jeweller supply shop,the compound comes in 4 bars course to fine, i just use the black (course) then the red (fine)skipped the others,i sanded the aluminum at 200 grit then 400 before buffing, you could go to 1000 grit before buffing,
wear a mask, i found the aluminum dust gives me a headache, here's my best piece, master cylinder cover, it took forever because i had to sand past the anodize coating,

bad assed, super fast and fully gassed
not to jack but look at this guys polishing job...not coated so he has to do it every couple of months, more shinin' than im interested in doing..but i swear you could start a fire off that...
