My CB450 wont shift into 4th gear. I can shift from neutral to first to second the third, but when i go to shift into 4th the shift lever wont go up no matter how hard i try. Does anyone have any idea why?

thanks

I had this similar problem. Remove the shifter, then remove the clutch case/front sprocket case. Push and pull the shifter rod. If there is play, then that might contribute to you not being able to shift up. There is a small circlip on the shifter rod that holds the rod in place. If there is play, pull the shifter rod all the way out and hold it, then push the small circlip all the way until it touches the washers. Make sure there isn't any play on the shifter rod, then reinstall everything.

Hopefully that helps!

Hey Grams, my 450 was being grumpy about shifting the other day as well. I found the shift shaft having to much sideplay, causing it to hang up. By sideplay I mean in and out of the case. If the shift shaft moves to far inboard, it interferes with something on the other side of the case. I pulled the shift lever off, put spacers(3mm-4mm) on the shaft and reinstalled the lever. Make sure the shaft stays as far out as possible when sliding the lever back on.

Also, make sure the clutch cable is freely moving and the clutch release mechanism on the LH side of the case is clean and well lubed.

Thanks guys, that was exactly my problem. I pulled the rod all the way out and pushed the clip all the way in and it held it in place. I took it out for a ride this evening and it went into 4th no problem. It even fixed my neutral light problem, haha.

Glad it helped! It's funny how such a small circlip can case a big problem.
