72 CB500 (3rd Project, I'm out of control)

I really wanted to actually ride one of the motorcycles I own. So I picked up this runner last week, descent price because the dudes wife sent the title through the washing machine.. so that will be interesting to work out at the DMV.

He says it just needs a new battery and plugs and a cover for the air filter box.

I road it around my neighborhood after a charge and it seemed to die when I was slowing down. When I talked with a buddy he said not having a good seal on the air filter will make the bike run lean. So hopefully that's the issue.

The plan with this bike will be to make it look awesome and run well. This will be a slowly progressing thing however because I want the 'running' part to be a continuous theme.

So far all I've done is get a new battery, air filter, and plugs but am having a hell of a time accessing the interior plugs atm...

Future plans are: new bars, mirrors, maybe some tires with more traction for camping season, paint will happen in march, new seat/pan, custom exhaust, digital gauges, maybe switch out the points. I'll make a mock up soon. Overall, I'm in love and I hope the filter cover fixes my problem.

haha no I got the 750 in June, the GT in November and this one last week. It's still nuts though. 3 shitty bikes kind of = the price of one reasonable working one though... well, initially.

good just get one running, enjoy it and then you have the other 2 to fiddle with. that way you don't fiddle with your perfectly running bike like I do all the time. im a monkey with a wrench wanting to break stuff thats not broken so i can fix it again :D

I want this tail light and I can't find it anywhere! >:(

Heres some design mock ups, I borrowed some DTT bikes to practice with so sorry if they seem familiar :P

Heres a girly design that I would want with some cream flaked paint:

Heres a minty looking one, might be better on a smaller bike though:

i'm leaning more towards this one, less flashy but still clean and rad:

This vendor; Sakito_classicbike also sells a red heart shaped tailight with bracket, you may try emailing them, they just don't have one listed at the moment.

thanks for the tip! I did email them and they're selling it for 25. Not bad. I also emailed the builder of the bike in the picture and they said the company that makes their custom lights went out of business..but they'll get in touch with me when they find someone else. Hopefully I'll figure that out by March.

So I took her out and road here around today, she rides kind of lean but that could be because of the air filter..

Question: The clutch is hard to engage but I haven't had a lot of experience with vintage bikes (not riding them, at least!), will a new cable make much of a difference or is it something I'll just need to get used to?

It made a big difference on a cb550 i wrenched on, it was really tight before i changed the cable.

Nice looking bike btw.

Edit: did not see the tail light already posted

Thanks! Right after I read your reply I ordered a new cable on ebay. I think anything I can do to make riding easier for me at this point is better.

**I want this bike to run well, if anyone has some suggestions about any modifications, tests or maintenance things that I'm missing please let me know! **

(Front breaks were rebuilt recently, chain is fine, electrical seems fine, I just replaced air filter, carbs were said to be ok...)

On your number 5 there is a tape made by rustoleum that is fuel stable and only sticks to its self when stretched. You can wrap it around the intake boots and it will seal them up and last for years. Ill dig out the name when I get a chance.

other than cutting a tire http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-TIRE-GROOVER-WITH-DELUXE-BLADE-SET-GROOVING-IRON-/230381324400?pt=Race_Car_Parts&hash=item35a3cc0870&vxp=mtr

Dirt track tires are going to provide the most complaint , consistent , predictable , contact patch there is . With a few important caveats . First off it's a non DOT tire . Don't get caught by some over officious LEO . There are ways to transfer the DOT info from another tire but you will have to look that up yourself or talk to some of our more nefarious neighbors . These are race tires and gas off rapidly meaning just sitting on the shelf will harden the tire . Once heated they form a skin that can be unpredictable to break through next time they are used . Now for the good stuff . These are sticky tires . Sticky in the right way though . They will grab like the dickens right till they send all kinds of warning that they are about to give up . Although they do this at the expense of tread life . If you want my suggestion for a winter , rain , cold weather tire this is it with the additional caution that below 40 degrees the tire may need either a warm garage or a tire warmer to get up to temperature because just use in freezing temperatures will not get it going .

Knobby tires are not the option for pavement , tarmac or macadam . Get that thought out of your head along with "vintage" Firestones or Goodyear . Crap for poseurs and two wheeled art projects . Wider tires need wider rims need more clearance and will slow steering a bit and will really test the rigidity of the chassis .

More when and if you need it .

Update, got the airbox, clip, heated grips, new clutch cable, new battery...

I ran into SO many problems when trying to switch out my handlebars.. first of all the wiring was inside the oem ones, so I had to drill out the one I got, cut the wires, got to solder for the first time tonight.. but now....

Front brake doesn't fit! >:(

and the banjo bolt is stuck. FML.

ALSO - even after switching to the new clutch cable it still feels as stiff as before, anything else I can do? Is it just an internal thing?

Is the pivot bolt on the perch tightened too much? Try loosening it and see if that helps.

Doesn't that just hold the break lever? The problem is there isn't enough room.
