72 CL175...Where is the manual for this screwdriver?

So my history of tinkering on bikes is pretty short. It started 2.5 years ago when I picked up an $800 Ninja 250 that I cleaned the carbs on and "somehow" brought it back to life. That's, at least, how I felt back then.

Since then, I've done a few more maintenance things that's intimidated me. Valve adjustments on my 250, fork rebuild on my SV650, figuring out why the horn isn't working on my SV650...that last one is still an ongoing project that's long forgotten.

My point is, I'm hungry to get my hands even dirtier. But not too dirty. ;)

The next obvious step in my motorcycle career was to pick up a 70's Honda and build it up to a cafe racer. That's my ambition at least. With a help of a friend who already has his CB360 cafe racer and a friend who has a motorcycle trailer, I was able to get this baby home safe and sound:

...which looks more like this in my messy garage:

My cafe racer friend gave me some inspiration with his homemade cafe seat. Let's see how it looks after I take off that seat and luggage rack:

Not bad! Actually, DAMN am I excited to work on this bike! *Note: don't worry about the blue rag, that is from my car spilling power steering fluid all over the place...from 6 months ago.

So the first order of business is to get this bike running without needing to hold the throttle. Looks like the idle jet is clogged since it dies instantly when I let go. Actually, it's surprising how well it sounds when I give it gas. Revs up and down well!

So right now, it looks like this as I wait to go buy a 10mm wrench that is lost in space somewhere...

There is much, much, much more to come. Thanks for looking!

Nice Bob, I am glad to see that my old home made seat is getting some loving, it was currently chilling in storage for 1/2 a year! The matchup looks really good! Sadly the 360 seat pan does not match up at all with a 175. I would at least use this home made seat as a model so you can make one that doesn't look as shitty as this one! Now all you need to do next is do something about that taillight/license plate holder monstrosity...

It's amazing how different it looks just getting the stock seat and the rack off! The bike has great potential, have fun!

Nice example of the breed and so clean too. I usually buy project bikes or piles of discarded junk, so modifying them comes naturally. That bike is so clean and so stock that I'd be tempted to keep it stock and use it as a runaround. Can't think of anything better than zipping over to LSD to sit and watch the moon come up over the lake, or to go for brunch or zip out to the store to pick up a bottle of red and baguettes, or a few tinnies and dogs.

But it isn't my bike, so I don't get a to vote. Have fun with it.

Very clean bike. Great project.

Make sure that car knows its place and moves outside. I haven't had a car in a garage for years now. Never looked back. ( Its a way of life! :-) )
The way you're going on this project, you're going to finish it up too early. Summers' still a little way off.

" So right now, it looks like this as I wait to go buy a 10mm wrench that is lost in space somewhere..."

SOOOO TRUE. I now own 3 of them....and as I just checked it seems as though I am down to 2 of them....stupid brain always walking off with it and forgetting where I set it down. ::)

Wow that bike looks like it is in great shape! And looked really sharp with that seat on it.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm getting a huge backlash from people telling me not to mess with this bike. I appreciate your opinion but.....

Just kidding. First order of business is to get the bike running right. To start us off on this exciting project is an exciting part and an equally exciting tool:

Update...just getting this thing up and reliable! Clubman bars are on, looking for a seat and rearsets now to complete it for this year. I just want to RIDE!

Things fixed:
-New rear tire
-New chain
-New front brake switch
-New front brake cable
-New tail light

Hit an indicated 72mph on this thing today...which means I was probably going 40 haha. Not bad for a 72 CL175 with 14,000+ miles on it!

More to come...
