74 CL 360 ENGINE TROUBLE

So I have a 74 cl 360 cafe. I started having some problems while riding, It will crank right up, go a little ways and then all of a sudden just cut out. Basically I keep giving it gas and nothing going. I had the carbs taken apart and cleaned and that doesnt seem to be the problem. Any one know of anything like this? Points maybe?

Post a pic of the bike please...unless your a hot chick then a selfie is fine.

a little more detail would be great.

by a " little ways" do you mean 5 feet or 5 miles?

is the bike fully warmed up or cold?

define "cut out" engine dies entirely or is it "cutting out" sputtering.

define "nothing going" you keep giving it gas ...why?

have you pulled the plugs and looked them over?

Are the bowls FULL. Is gas even flowing to the carbs? Both carbs?

Define "carbs taken apart" do you mean every jet, emulsion tube, air corrector, butterflies, floats, valves, needles, A/F adjusters, vac screws, slides, diaphragms, EVERYTHING taken apart... OR do you mean you took the bowls off.

Define "cleaned"

make sure gas cap is venting
test ride it with cap loose(1/2 or more empty tank to avoid spillage)
after this test go ahead and do a full ignition tuneup, check/adjust valve lash and cam chain as well ;)

Set your timing and valves. Set points. Etc. Start at the beginning and make sure all the basics are covered. No point in performing heart surgery if all the other organs are shot.

Also, what modifications have been done if any?

Also check for a loose nut behind the handlebars....they often cause a lot of issues..... ;D

Suddenly cutting out, does it just die? or is it running poorly then die? To add the the accumulating list, a loose wire under the tank, or in the headlight bucket, can cause this too, as the power to the coils can be interrupted...

Also, are you using the choke to start? .. Are you opening it after it starts? Most of these do not need any choke, mine uses hal way, then no choke, even cold.

i would definitely take a look at the bowl heights and make adjustments if necessary.

Also check:

Battery, coils, condensor, plugs, plug wires, etc - Cutting out like that sounds electrical and especially if there isnt enough juice create a good spark

And definitely check timing and points

Drain tank and clean fuel tap.
I've never been able to remove the tank filter without damage, best thing to do is invert tank and spray a bunch of aerosol carb cleaner through it from 'tap' side without trying to remove it
