Polyester resin's only advantage is its price; it is definitely not recommended for anything other than fibreglass.

Epoxy resins can withstand a lot high heat than Polyester, it is better for the environment and yourself. Like said above it is more abrasive to different chemicals.

The resin isn't what is making the laminate strong, it is the fibers. I haven't done the research but I bet epoxy has a higher tensile strength than polyester.

You could probably find a clear polyester but if you tried to cure it at 280 degrees F then it would fail unlike epoxy that will withstand high heat. It really depends on what you are using it for, all epoxy resins will need some kind of U.V. protection paint because U.V. rays break down the resin.

thanks for reposting the pics of those molds. thought i looked but i guess im blind. wouldnt be the first time. progress looks great. cant wait to see the new pieces on the bike.

Aw man, I'm so glad you dig it Chris! I kinda took the reins and ran with it so I'm pleased that you are pleased. As soon as you get around to it I'd love to see a similar view angle but on the bike. I think that'd be a nice pic for the blog header!

I got the clamp wrestled on last night. Levers polished, bracket for the MC reservoir made, and clip ons trimmed down 1".

I think the pockets are to collect the envy-laden tears from fellow bikers at meet ups.

HAHAHA! You guys can make me smile on the shittiest of days!

@PJ: They were originally gonna be simple cut-outs to drop some of the massive weight of the original piece but I ran into some.....features, that begged for something to hide behind. Hence the inserts. I'd planned to epoxy them in place but these are just gooped in with RTV. It occurs though that they could be raised up closer to the upper surface with some simple spacers under them so change can be had.

Well. The rear tire hugger is out of the mold and ready to be trimmed. This one gave me the biggest headache of the three carbon pieces. I misjudged my resin kick time and had to frantically finish laying the carbon about half way through. As such there were quite a few imperfections. I ended up giving it a skim coat of resin afterward to fill the pinholes. It will get sanded down and urethane clear coated.

Originally, I wasn't going to leave much exposed carbon on any of these pieces, but the more I look at it, the less I want to cover it. The front fender will get just a touch of blue paint, the rear none, and the belly pan will still get the same exposed pinstripe of carbon.

Oh my, that is beautiful. I love the look of carbon fibre, definitely have to leave some exposed.
