Epoxy resins can withstand a lot high heat than Polyester, it is better for the environment and yourself. Like said above it is more abrasive to different chemicals.
The resin isn't what is making the laminate strong, it is the fibers. I haven't done the research but I bet epoxy has a higher tensile strength than polyester.
You could probably find a clear polyester but if you tried to cure it at 280 degrees F then it would fail unlike epoxy that will withstand high heat. It really depends on what you are using it for, all epoxy resins will need some kind of U.V. protection paint because U.V. rays break down the resin.
