'76 CJ360T Sluggish Throttle

I just picked up a CJ360T today and it starts like a champ, however when I ride it the throttle gets it rolling and when I roll on it it responds so slowly!!!

I am sure that this is one of the questions that have been asked again and again, but if anyone could give me a check list to start with that would rock!!

Start with the common sense stuff.
Start with a basic tuneup. Google and download a service manual as your first step. Then look for YouTube videos. Setting the points and timing is not rocket science, but you need to be sure that is right before you do anything.

There is a pretty good likelihood that your carburetors need work. You'll have to tear them down and give them a good cleaning. Best to use the dip method. Never soak any rubber parts or gaskets in the carb cleaner. After the dip, spray out all passages with carb cleaner then blow out with compressed air.

It's possible that the carb slides are stuck, and once you get the carbs all cleaned it may work just fine.

It appears to be running on one cylinder, the right. Check my work...

I think that only one cylinder is firing. the plug looks brand new and the one on the right looks normal, not lean or rich. After running for a few minutes the right header is hot and the left is cold to the touch

Brand new plugs / The gap on the plugs is correct.

Compression is not great Right is 135 / Left is 150

Brand new petcock on the bike

Pulled the air filters and they are new. The same throttle response occurs!

I am guessing here, but the plug wires on either cylinder are not the same. This could be the culprit. I will check spark on the left cylinder when I can get an extra leg here... :D

At any rate! I will continue to check the points, fuel flow/lines

Well, I had a customer come into the shop one day. His CB400f would not rev above 4,000 RPM. So, I went through the tuneup procedure. Filed and burnished the points, set the point gap and timing. Still no good. I shorted out one set of points, and it did the funny thing on one coil. Shorted out the other set, and it did it on that coil, too.

So, whatever was causing this bike to not run properly was affecting all cylinders.

I flip up the seat to start examining the wiring harness. There are a bunch of papers under the seat. The air intake is also under the seat.

The guy had just come from his broker's office, and he had a few papers to bring back home. He threw them under the seat, which blocked the air intake.

I laughed and laughed.

He earned his new nickname, "Chokester."
 
Normal compression is 171 psi. Minimum is 151 psi. 135 is bad. You need to fix that. It will never run well that low.

I have replaced the points and gapped and set the timing correctly. I tore down the carbs and the diaphragms are both good, the float pin on the left carb is missing the little wire clip and the float pin was sticking, so I replaced it with another pin and it started to move more smoothly, however there is no wire clip on the float pin.

I started it up after all this and the left header is still cold to the touch and the right is hot. I am ordering a new carb rebuild kit and new set of plugs to see if this can get running smoothly
