Thanks for the input, & point taken, the seat will def. get redone after this weekend, after that I have 3 weeks or so of waiting for the title & plate, so I'll have time to dial it in. After that, rear sets & it's done for the summer, this fall I'll be de-tabbing the frame & having a friend who paints cars have a go at it.

Hell,you should be able to buy a Harley Sportster "Peanut" tank online,at a swap meet or at a motorcycle
salvage yard for $25-35. They make for a great looking,swoopy tail cap and you don't even have to do too much Fabbing to make it fit. Just cut the bottom off and weld it onto your seat pan.
At a junk yard they may even GIVE you one if the bottom of one of their junk tanks is rusted through.
They know no one is going to mess with trying to fix a thin,rusted through tank anyway and it might get them a repeat customer in the end. Even if its beat up you can cut the bottom off and then hammer and dolly it back to the shape it needs to be.
You'd be amazed at what can be done with a hammer and dolly if you take your time and work out the metal a little at a time.
If he's going to the junkyard I think he is (only game in town as far as I know), they won't give the time of day for free. And it'll cost twice as much if it's ever been in the vicinity of a Harley. We could really use another wrecker around here to foster some compitition. But, rent being what it is

made friends w/ him a few years ago, he's got a ton of stuff, most of the time he's not sure where it is, but really good guy, he probly has a tank I can use. Was going to go that route but stock battery was to big to hide, now that I have a smaler battery it might just work.

If your dealing with someone like that then they are NOT a motorcycle enthusiast and probably doesn't want anything from you other than your money. I DON'T do business with this type of person unless they have an item I can only get from them. They at one time may have had a passion for bikes ,the bike scene and the fellow riders who enjoy it,but they have lo$t their way and only see dollar $igns now.
They do more harm than good for people wanting to get into bikes,especially noobs who they may treat like shit. Just because you have a crap load of old bike parts and are a dealer doesn't mean you can be a DICK HEAD! Guess what we don't need or want people like you! Let someone that gives a shit sell those parts and if you weren't around those same parts will still sell. Your NOT someone special and your not someone so important with some unknown knowledge that no one else with a little common sense couldn't master with some time and some reference manuals.
Noobs get the wrong impression that this is normal behavior and that people that own old bikes are snobs and grouches when this is not the case at all. I have seen this sort of behavior in the street/Hot rod community(Holier than thou) and guess what if you are a Dick to a noob then as far as I'm concerned your a Dick to me and I won't do business with you....DICK!
We all had to start out somewhere and learn somewhere. Not everyone was brought up in a garage or with parents that were mechanically inclined. Some of us had to learn out of necessity due to not having the money to have a shop work on their stuff every time something went wrong with it. Other may have never been exposed to bikes,cars,trucks etc. and now later on in life want to see what they have been missing. These people need to be guided not shunned and looked down upon because they are noobs to all things mechanical. We were all noobs at one time or another.
