Haha, oh that's deviously brilliant! Fear not, your secret is safe with me. Joking aside thank you for the assist on the parts place recommendation. It's always nice to know where "the people are going" so you know you're not getting ripped off.

Alot of guys don't know that dealer.

Most use bikebandit.
Western hills honda(I think) is another.

HPD has slowish shipping, but they have the best prices and most up to date availability I have found.
Honda parts are some times discontinued and then pop back up. Lot of places never update that something is once again available.

Looks like a great source. I'm going to start looking for gaskets et. al. today. I really need to get my parts list together!

Jets r us for any brass you need if you do wind up making the mistake of pods or need to rejet for an exhaust.

On sohc4 search out Hondaman.
He sells a very nice ignition and some updated fuse holders.
Dyna S is ok, but its important to learn to tune points.

As it stands I don't intend to make a jump to pods. I've heard a lot about the engineering that went into the airbox and things seem to work happier/easier with one in use. Speaking of - Where does one find the airbox filter? Mine seems to be in tough shape.

I don't know what I'm going to do for exhaust at the moment. We don't have facilities to bend pipes so that comes into the decision. I had intended to replace the points (I'm guessing that's what the sohc4shop link was for).

Surffly what's your SN on sohc?

Side note from reaearch/reading, pods and pd carbs on the 550 are a PITA to tune

I originally wanted that "open" look under the seat... but I'll take some slick covers and an airbox that makes a bike run well over the open look if it comes down to it.

There is a guy who makes a pod like set up but is just like running a stock airbox....

Check it out. My buddy has one and loves it...

I am not sure if he stopped completely but I think he may have stopped making the set up. He does refer where you can get the parts to make your own set up...

That's an interesting thread to read through. It's something I'll give some thought to after I get the bike running and start thinking about what direction I want to take the "final project".

So tomorrow I'm sitting down and going through my manual and making a parts list. Money will be spent, parts will be bought, shipping will be paid...

Ordered up a mess of parts Saturday. Then I went into the garage, pulled the carbs and started taking them apart and cleaning. Aside from the gaskets they seem like they're in decent shape. The floats seems solid etc. When I get the gaskets in I'll put them back together and keep them off the bike for a few days while we do the top end. I also bought parts for the rear and front brakes... and a lot of other stuff.

Sort of excited to get my parts in.

Would anyone have a source for the following:

Carb gaskets (leading to the stock airbox)
Airbox filter
Airbox top

I'm having some trouble finding these for my '78 cb550.
