79 CB750K Rear Tail Shaping

Ok here's the progress on my 750K. Went with the florist foam method. Then roughed out the shape with a rasp and a long piece of 80 grit sandpaper. Next filled in the gaps with wire to fit the shape of the frame for the 79 750k (it's not straight like the 78 and earlier). Now I'm on filling the foam with bondo then fiberglass. I'll take the seat off the bike once I have a workable plug.

Will try to keep you up as I go. Yeee Haaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a lot easier than building my race cars. It's great to be back in the bike scene.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow as I go.

YES!!!!
Finally a DOHC work in progress

I like the tank work as well

Look forward to seeing a finished product

Is this a one off piece of will you be open to reproducing the seat?

What are you planning to do for as side cover replacements?

Peace

The tank has the hammered side indents, tail will be painted to match the tank. As for the side covers? Well I'm thinking aluminum with holes (option one), make fiberglass covers to fill the area (option 2), or replace the stock covers (last resort!!!!).
The tank and seat will be painted black (base coat/clear coat) with a red and white Honda wing with red pinstripes. I do the paint and fabrication. Nothing to farm out here.

As for this tail...I'm planning on making molds so I can reproduce them. I'm going to build about 5 different tail sections so everyone can have some options. I have shut down my race business (not many people buying $50,000 race cars) and am just working on bikes now. This is a very nice change of pace. I retired from the Air Force 14 years ago, so now I can play a little. Of course don't tell my wife I'm just playing. ;D

I have 2 other bikes to build also (a 76 CB750K and an 83 XR350R). I'm also picking up a CL350 this week in exchange for rebuilding a set of carbs and a repaint on a CB650.

Will post more pictures by Thursday if I can make some more progress.

Please do

I have a 79 K as well and have been waiting for someone to come out with a nice seat
Carpy only has one that will fit the 79

How do you like the Clubman Bars?

Not sure if it's just me or not but I seem to sprain my clutch side wrist a lot and since it sits on the triple tree there's no room for adjustment

(Crab_cakes has little girly wrist comments in 5...4...3...2...1...\/)

Your right about the DOHCs. Not many build pictures or interest. These are great bikes and make for nice customs. I've got a set of Clubmans and a set of clip ons. I think I like the clip ons a bit better but I'm saving these for the 76. With this seat you wear the bike rather than sit on top, so the clubmans have a little better feel.

I used the Tarozzi rear sets, very difficult to find for the DOHCs. The others don't have the quality of the Tarozzis. This was the same bike in another thread that I bought a few weeks ago. I'm working quick to get it finished. I just hope my wife can be patient with me....she thinks I'm a bit nuts. ::)

Stay tuned.

Nice I like the shape of that tail and the tank looks great.
Sounds like your going to be busy!!!

Picked up the new fairing for $40 from a local Moto Guzzi guy that never installed it. My wife likes the look with the fairing. You know you've got to keep the wife happy!! ;D

I'm working on both the 76 and the 79 at the same time depending on my mood and how much I want to get finished. I really need to get the 79 back on the road so I can enjoy the nice riding weather. I'll post a progress picture later today. As for now this here's a picture of the 76 I picked up in Atlanta. I need to de-redneck it and bring it back to life. The early bikes seem to be getting more expensive as people catch on to the cafe scene.

Wow, does the 76 need help or what!!! :o

I like the DOHC for the simple fact that not every hipster with a pair of clubman bars and ratty converse shorties will be clamoring for it. not that there's anything wrong with clamoring...or hipsters....they're fun to taunt.
The fact is, there's a metric buttload of performance potential in the two stick motors that there ever will be in a 'Sock'..
I just picked up a cb1100F that I'll be tinkering around with this winter. Back when Pops Yosh played with them they were making in excess of 150 ponies. That's nothing to sneeze at, especially in a properly updated chassis.

Ok, here's your daily fix. If I'm boring you just tell me to stop. :'( Burned through the bondo in a couple of places and had to redo a lot of the tail. But, I like the shape so at the end of the day I threw some black primer on it to see how it looks.

Is this just bondo over the foam or is there fiberglass in there as well? Cuz bondo isn't very strong.....

Just a quick note: The gas tank has been a real hoot. After hammering in the knee indents, had to fix the fuel filler neck. Well, thought we had all the gas out and didn't smell too bad....sooooooo we started the mig to fix the pin holes from cutting off the flip portion of the cap. Well BOOOM!! First touch and a flame shot about 15 feet in the air and the tank went flying. Ok, quit laughing. Scared the crap out of me and my buddy. :o After we stopped laughing we decided to really wash out the tank with water and fill it with inert gas (should have thought of that in the beginning). Well it put a bit of a dent in the tank and completely melted the bondo that was in the indents.

Just thought I'd be the butt of the joke for the week. Sure wish I had a video!!!!!

Right now it's just bondo over foam. This is only the plug. I'm making the tail in fiberglass for the finished product. Don't think this plug would hold up for long....although it has been a bit tempting to shoot around the neighborhood as is.

For the people waiting for it to dry out. you can always clean out the gas fill it with water and cut it while its full of water

That's about what we did. Washed the tank out again, filled with water, then topped off with inert gas (maybe overkill, but after blowing the tank across the room figured better to be safe). I would highly recommend filling with water first.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and help so far. Didn't do anything today. Went to the Charlotte Auto Fair to pick up buffing supplies and some metal shaping hammers.

Here's a couple of progress pictures. I sprayed Pam on the basic plug then put on 1 layer of cloth fiberglass then 2 layers of mat. Dried for the day then popped it off the plug and have now applied 2 more layers of cloth. Not too bad for a first shot. Once this has set up I'll do the finish sanding and apply paint.

This seat is now just raw fiberglass, nothing under the skin. I'm going to put a fiberglass cross piece under the tail to bolt to the frame. Should work fine. Let me know what you think. I'll post pictures all the way through the finished piece.

Here I've added the glovebox, cutout, and mount for the frame:

Made flat pieces of fiberglass, then cut and made the glove box/battery tray.

Here is the opening for the box.
