82 Virago Front end

Hey guys Im purchasing a 82 virago 750. I was just wondering if it would be easier to keep the stock forks and lower them also adding a spoke rim or go for a r1 or r6 complete front end off ebay? I know that both would require machining but I am a college kid and would like to keep the costs minimal. Any input is appreciated thanks!

I don't know about the machining for the in inverted r1 r6 forks to fit, but in my research for one of those front ends, complete. $500-$2000. With 1st Gen machine a a xs650 front axel so that an xs650 wheel can fit. Can anyone confirm that about the axel? To lower you can pull forks through the clamps or lower it internally with spacers.

I'm sure you can use an r1 or r6 with just some tapered bearings from all balls. If you are wanting to keep spoked wheels with the r1/r6 front end then yes you have to machine some spacers and such. But if you want to use the yamaha wheel then it should be a fairly straightforward swap.

Any swap is not going to keep your costs down however. Cbpayne is right complete front ends in decent shape go for what he said.

If your curious about the machining let me know and I can get you some links

New front end isn't going to be cheaper unless you hoard parts as you find em cheap (and they end up also being useable).

That's what I do with all bike parts, when possible.

I got lucky withmy r6 front end neighbor sold it to me for $40. I couldn't pull my money out fast enough
